Summary
THERE IS POWER IN SILENCE
East Anglia, 1645. Martha Hallybread, a midwife, healer and servant, has lived for more than four decades in her beloved coastal village of Cleftwater. Everyone knows Martha, but no one has ever heard her speak.
One Autumn morning, the peaceful atmosphere of Cleftwater is shattered by a sinister arrival and Martha becomes a silent witness to a witch-hunt. As a trusted member of the community, she is enlisted to search the bodies of the accused women. But whilst Martha wants to help her friends, she also harbours a dark secret that could cost her own freedom. In desperation, she revives a wax witching doll that she inherited from her mother, in the hope that it will bring protection. But the doll's true powers are unknowable, the tide is turning, and time is running out . . .
An immersive and deeply moving novel inspired by true events, The Witching Tide breathes new life into history whilst holding up a mirror to the world we live in now. A story of loyalty and betrayal, fear and obsession, the impact of misogyny and the power of resistance, it is a magnificent debut from a striking new literary voice.
Critic reviews
"A beautiful, haunting and utterly transporting novel that takes the reader back to a terrifyingly real witching England." (Naomi Wood)
"I absolutely devoured The Witching Tide. To read this book is to step inside time...a powerful, riveting read, each sentence pristine and haunting." (Elizabeth Macneal)

Excellent read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. It vividly brought to life how horrid and torturous the witch trials must of been for the accused.

Wonderful.
The book is about the witch trials in East Anglia and more specifically is set in a fictional village on the East Anglian coast. The characters are so engaging and the narrator extremely good.
The witch trials, especially those in East Anglia, have always fascinated me and this book makes me want to more and more !
Highly recommended.

The More Things Change...
The more they stay the same constantly came to mind as I listened to this beautifully crafted historical novel, one of the finest I've read addressing witch trials. Meyers prose was magnificent, We can retell these harrowing tales with the hopes of learning from them. but the human psyche has not changed much since the 1600s. They may no longer be able legally kill women who won't comply but they'll burn us as witches one way or the other. Dont believe me? Now they'll brandish their pitchforks if women, even with all this history of our persecution roaring behind us, refuse to say men are women. This witch won't burn though.

Brilliant
This was one I started ekeing out and listening to less, just because I didn’t want it to end. The narration was perfect for a range of tricky accents and a mute protagonist.
Beautiful writing for fans of Maggie O’Farrell and Hilary Mantel.

Loved this book, there is a depth that many others don't capture.
You understand how little the nature of people has changed when you read/listen to a book with such well defined characters and historic depth.
