About this listen

The Winter Folly is a gripping mystery of family secrets and past sins by Lulu Taylor, author of The Snow Angel.

In this house there are many secrets...

It is 1965 and young Alexandra Crewe obediently marries the man her father has selected for her. But, very soon, both she and her husband Laurence realize that their marriage is a disaster. When real love finds Alexandra, plucking her out of her unhappy existence, she is powerless to resist. Her home becomes Fort Stirling, a beautiful Dorset castle, but Alexandra fears that there will be a price to pay for this wonderful new life. When tragedy strikes, it seems that her punishment has come – and there is only one way she can atone for her sins...

In the present day, Delilah Young is the second wife of John Stirling and the new chatelaine of Fort Stirling. The house seems to be a sad one and Delilah hopes to fill it with life and happiness. But, when she attempts to heal the heartbreak in John's life, it seems that the forces of the past might be too strong for her. Why does John have such a hatred for the old castle on the hill, and what happened to his mother when she vanished from his life? As Delilah searches for the truth, she realizes that perhaps some secrets are better left buried...

As always, Lulu tells a great story and I was hooked to find out what happened!

Loved it!

Excellent story well crafted with great pace. However I really don't think Lulu really needed to put in so many highly detailed sex scenes. The story carried itself and they added nothing to the mix.

Cross generation love story

What made the experience of listening to The Winter Folly the most enjoyable?

There were some good twists in story line

Any additional comments?

The narrator needs to practise on men's voices. I found I didn't like any of the men in the story, just because of the way they spoke. It was generally a good story line that kept me listening as to what would happen next. A few times I'd hope traffic lights would turn to red so I could listen a bit more. I found the ending a bit flat and predictable and found myself shouting at the story saying , do this or that. But overall a good book to listen to that was not to sloppy.

Story kept you listening

Would you consider the audio edition of The Winter Folly to be better than the print version?

Cannot answer that as I did not read the print version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nicky - he was passionate, committed, devoted, and in the end redeemed.

What about Julia Barrie’s performance did you like?

Excellent voice, great accents, made many characters come alive.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did wish for more traffic to lengthen the available listening time. But I do not think I could listen to ANY audiobook of this length in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

This was a good story, with a few interesting plot twists and some nicely fleshed out characters. Enjoyed it.

Good story

At first I was bothered by the alternating stories of two ladies living in two different times. It was necessary though as their lives were intertwined.
BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN!! Engaging and very enjoyable. I found myself saying out loud “OH NO!” When the unexpected happened.
Julia Barrie is one of my favourite narrators. She brings the characters to life!
This is the first Lulu Taylor story I’ve had but will CERTAINLY look for more !!

Loved the ups and downs and the twists in the story. Just when you think you've got the whole thing sussed, it springs another surprise. Really enjoyed it and would like to read/listen to more by this author.
