About this listen

All Lady Victoria Kirby wants is to dig in the dirt, take notations, and record history, thank you very much. Bumbling through ballrooms and getting disdained by the ton for her less than ideal looks, on the other hand, is the last thing she wants. But her reckless father has a different idea for her future when he puts up the ultimate ante - her hand in marriage - and loses. Over her dead body.

The Duke of Chase cannot bear to see a woman misused. After all, he saw that often enough as a child. So when he's witness to a marquess gambling away his daughter to a lecher of a man, he has no choice but to step in and rescue her. Lady Victoria has a reputation for being as tart as a lemon and as bitter as one, too. So, he may have just found the perfect wife to keep a promise he made to himself long ago-to never have an heir. With her, surely, he'll never be tempted to take her to bed and break that promise.

But when he meets the wild, witty, intelligent young lady he's bound to marry, he knows trouble is headed his way.... And everything he ever swore to uphold may very well come undone, especially his heart.

Contains mature themes.

mostly sweet

I gotta say, the narrator did let it down... it's not that she's bad, but because she doesn't alter the voices, it does/can become confusing... the only voice alteration that I noticed, was that she made Derek's voice quite jittery, so he kinda sounded like an elderly lady... very odd choice, even just deepening it somewhat would've sufficed!

As for the story... the start is harsh & I'm not a great big fan of the emphasis on beauty that so many reg rom writers love to stress (haven't they seen all the old paintings, all that inbreeding did leave it's mark), but this one did hit me at one point... as that would've been a painful thing to hear from the person you love!

It's a good story, with strong characters who work really well together, become friends first & their love grows from it... much preferable to the insta-love trope.

but if I'd heard one more word about how slim she was, I might've done some damage to something!

One bit did irritate me, which was the ballroom scene where she blows a casket over him defending her... I did find that part inane... yes he did take it too far & she could've asked him to tone it down, but going off on one & storming off?!

I much prefer his method to hers, which is to hear the insults, get offended, internalise it, keep everyone at bay & develop a mild form of PTSD, get upset & hide away to cry about it.. but that's just me 🤷‍♀️

Absolutely loved it

I had to forward the narration to 1.2x but immediately I did, I absolutely loved the storyline.

Awful narration

I liked the story but it was very badly let down by the narrator. Not so much a performance more a reading with very little definition between the characters and it was difficult at times to work out who was speaking. I will not bother with anything read by this narrator again.

baby girl voiced narrator

some times hero and heroine voices indistinguishable, the duke kind of sexless. can i bear listening any more now that he is, after years, giving into desire with that little voice?

I just couldn't finish it

Between the writing and the Narrator, I'm sorry to say it was not for me.

Excruciating mispronunciations.

The narration is very ponderous (I had to speed it up) and somewhat ignorant. Covent Garden was read as ‘covenant’ rather than ‘cuvvent’ garden.

Great Story, not the best Narrator!

I would recommend that you listen to the preview first. There’s something “not quite right” about her voice and delivery… too high pitched and her diction is not always on point! There are some words that she just can’t pronounce.

The story is robust and unique and I would read more of this author, but not if narrated by Sasha Higgins.

I suspect that the author is an American, because she doesn’t realise that we Brits study MATHS, not Math.

This was a free title in Audible’s Plus catalogue. I would have felt shortchanged if I had to pay for it!
