About this listen

A city threatened by unimaginable horrors must trust their most hated outcast, or lose everything, in this crushing epic fantasy debut.

After 10 years on the run, dodging daemons and debt, reviled magician Edrin Walker returns home to avenge the brutal murder of his friend. Lynas had uncovered a terrible secret, something that threatened to devour the entire city. He tried to warn the Arcanum, the sorcerers who rule the city. He failed. Lynas was skinned alive and Walker felt every cut. Now nothing will stop him from finding the murderer.

Magi, mortals, daemons, and even the gods - Walker will burn them all if he has to. After all, it wouldn't be the first time he's killed a god....

Dark and Gritty

I loved this. It was dark, Violent and full of drama. It was everything I wanted I a fantasy book, and I didn't even know it. As silly as this sounds, it was very "real". No flawless heros.

Tried to get through it..

Having listened to the authors most recent book and really enjoyed I thought I would try this one…

Lots of reviews stating the narration is bad and I thought…. It’ll be ok.. but no..

The narration is terrible.. it sounds like the narrator is English so he should know what a London accent sounds like.. he has no clue.. this is sick van dyke ‘cockney’ thrown in with Mary popping and Oliver.

I gave up after 3 hours.. the story is ok, little bit weak and predictable.. it may have got better but it was an early abort due to the performance.

Thoroughly Enjoyed the Story

Enjoyed the story, but I wish I had bought the book and read it. The narrator is absolutely appalling, butchering pronunciation of the English language so badly it's painful at times.

A callous man kills a god

What a great story. A great level of coarse sarcasm without it being too ‘edgy’ or annoying. Great characters with a sense of realism, really brought to life with the voice acting. Just a damn good listen.

the traitor god

I loved the world building. I have always loved fantasy books and only just started listing to audiable. I loved the character building. I do however wish there was more than one pov but other than that I really did like the book.

Good story, but that accent!

A great, original story. I do wish they’d chosen a better narrator. This one has a weird accent and pronunciation which becomes more and more noticeable and irritating as the book goes on.

exciting action packed

If you like an anti hero you'll enjoy this. He's really only come back to take revenge on the person who killed his friend and he isn't exactly a good guy. I loved it, loved the main character Walker and even though the setting and people are grim it's a fun ride figuring out what's going on and seeing what happens. I did feel like the middle got a bit slow but I sped up to 1.2 speed and all of a sudden the action began. Highly recommended.

loved the narrator he had the perfect gruff voice for the character and I could always tell who was talking.

Took a little while to get into

Took a little while to get into and at one point I did just think of giving up but persevered story was okay obviously far far better middle to the end of the book. Not sure if I’m gonna read the second book
Finished on a bit of a cliffhanger, but it’s obviously done so because this is gonna be a series of books trying to get the hook in early quite a lot of worldbuilding going on. Not quite sure about the narrator either wasn’t as bad as some of the reviews made it to be

A dark and gritty start

I really liked this book, at first I hesitant a bit because of the narrater, but I'm glad I listened further.

I like the worldbuilding and characters, I'll be picking up the the second book.
