About this listen

A tired ship with a worn-out crew, HMS Scylla has one more trip to make before her much postponed re-fit. Bound for St. Helena, she is to deliver the island's next governor: a simple enough mission and, as peace looks likely to be declared, no one is expecting difficulties. Except, perhaps, the commander of a powerful French battle squadron, who has other ideas.

With conflict and intrigue at sea and ashore, The Torrid Zone is filled to the gunnels with action, excitement, and fascinating historical detail; a truly engaging listen.

This was the first I’ve listened to in the series, and I was completely immersed. Swashbuckling, stiff upper lips and sea captains. Such great side stories to keep it interesting. Am quite attached to the main characters now, and listening to another one. Well read, too.

I loved this!

An interesting book, combining adventure with a new perspective on a place that is often best known as Napoleon's prison. The performance is good with a nice mix of accents appropriate for a ship of this period which really help engage you with the story.

An enjoyable read

Experimental choice from my preferred genre of modern day physiological crime thrillers and what a find. The writer Alaric Bond demonstrates a remarkable understanding of life upon a Royal naval ship during the early 1800's, which transforms the listener / reader to feel that they are actually on board living amongst the crew, and experiencing the dramas of life on the high seas amongst the conflicts with the French fleet. Naval history and characterization at it's very best and I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series.

Exceptional historical writing
