About this listen

Joss Grand once ruled the Brighton underworld with his sidekick Jacky Nye - until Jacky washed up by the West Pier in 1968. Though Grand's alibi seems cast-iron, Luke, a true crime writer, is sure there's more to the story, and he convinces the criminal-turned-philanthropist to be interviewed for a book about his life. Soon Luke realises that in stirring up secrets from the past, he may be in terrible danger.

Intrigue, murder, passion and pain

If you could sum up The Ties That Bind in three words, what would they be?

Intriguing, compelling, thought-provoking

What other book might you compare The Ties That Bind to, and why?

Peter James Inspector Grace series as the descriptions of the Brighton area are quite detailed and the complex relationships in the book remind me of his writing.

What about Robert Blackwood’s performance did you like?

The various characters came to life with the voices given to them.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

In long chunks if not in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

A book that takes you to unexpected places. The interesting relationships, deep emotions and the ability to find good in those around you are all contributing factors to a well balanced and gripping book.

Colourful characters and description.

Enjoyed the narration. The way the story was built up and how each character was portrayed was excellent. Particularly enjoyed the description of the setting- in and around Brighton.

AN EXCELLENT PEROFORMANCE OF A GREAT BOOK.

Luke is a true crime writer in search of a story. When he flees to Brighton after an explosive break-up, the perfect subject lands in his lap: reformed gangster Joss Grand. Now in his eighties, Grand once ruled the Brighton underworld with his sadistic sidekick Jacky Nye - until Jacky washed up by the West Pier in 1968, strangled and thrown into the sea. Though Grand's alibi seems cast-iron, Luke is sure there's more to the story than meets the eye, and he convinces the criminal-turned-philanthropist to be interviewed for a book about his life.
I don't usually read Psychological thrillers but I have signed for a online course from the author. I am so glad I did, this is the second book of hers I have read recently and she is a great author. He plots are dense, she must painstakingly plan each twist and turn because I did not see any of them coming. There is one particular character that really stands out in a book of many good characters whom are all vividly written and relatable. I hope some of her magic rubs off on the course, if not I know its going to be worth every penny spent on it. Highly recommended, both course and novel.

Brilliant

A great story, full of the atmosphere of Brighton’s streets. Loved the narrator’s seamless change from one accent to another. A highly enjoyable and entertaining novel, full of twists. Erin Kelly is an accomplished writer, fully in control of her craft. Loved it
