About this listen

Set in Sicily, The Terracotta Dog is the second novel in the humorous Inspector Montalbano series by Andrea Camilleri.

*Adapted for BBC4's Inspector Montalbano series*

After a cloak and dagger exchange with an ageing Mafioso, Inspector Montalbano is left haunted by the man’s dying words, which lead him to a mountainside just west of Vigàta where he unearths two young lovers, dead fifty years and still embracing, watched over by a life-size terracotta dog.

Heedless of personal danger, Montalbano’s drive to solve this old crime forces him on a journey through Sicily’s World War II history and to the dark heart of one family . . .

The Terracotta Dog is followed by the third title in this satirical series, The Snack Thief.

Some characters bit annoying, but story got going

Characters are a bit cliched, but story got going in second half. Enjoyed the narrator.

What a joy.

Even though I know most of these stories very well, I enjoyed this very much. The story is great, the narrator super, it was most uplifting. I shall certainly be collecting more. The author manages to tell a story with love, sex, death, violence, mystery and strong language without any gratuitous intent,

Surprising

I have read quite a few Montalbano books, seen others on tv and heard some tbks. I was aware from an Italian speaking friend that the tv show's subtitles did not reflect the actual dialogue. I was not really expecting the crude language of this translation. Not normally prudish but I prefer my Salvo to be a bit more sanitised. However one thing that I learnt was how Catarella got his job. Don't think I will get any other Montalbano Audible books. There's plenty of other things I can listen to.
