About this listen

Regency London

Having spent a childhood summer with Viscount Giles Weston, Angelica Wayne has never forgotten his kindness. But when he employs her as his daughter's governess, she finds him cold and formidable.

A widower, Giles is engaged to the beautiful but indifferent Lady Barbara Darlington. Darkly cynical, he avoids emotional commitment and wishes to be married in name only.

Despite Giles's attitude, Angelica comes to enjoy his company, and her feelings for him start to rekindle.

When Barbara calls off the engagement, Giles asks Angelica to take her place as his bride.

And Angelica must decide whether she can marry a man seemingly incapable of returning her affection . . .

What is the reason for Giles's haughtiness? Can Angelica thaw his frosty exterior? Or are both condemned to a life without love?

This is a well crafted love story, rather let down by some mis-pronounciation of many words…. Sometimes hilariously!

Good story - unfortunate pronounciations!

I've been checking on and off with the hope of a Dorothy Mack audiobook for a while now, so pleased one has been released and I hope for many more. For me her books have always been the next best thing to Georgette Heyer.

This isn't my favourite of DM's book but I still feel it deserves 5 stars. I find the characters well fleshed out and the era detail convincing. A deeply satisfying Romance.

The narration seemed a little odd initially and I wasn't sure I'd make it through the first chapter! However I did get used to it and it didn't negatively impact my enjoyment of the book. I've come to accept that mispronounciation is almost inevitable with a Regency Romance. In this case there were only a few errors, enough to be annoying though.

Finally a Dorothy Mack Audiobook

Charming romance with engaging characters. Honourable men and interesting women with umph. Looking forward to reading her other books.

Charming Regency Romance

Same result as always, but a more novel story. Never over enamoured with narrated type of voice, but not grating just a personal preference.

Enjoyed it.

I’m afraid I didn’t really get started on this, due to the awful narration. The inflection at the end of every sentence was not needed! I just couldn’t listen to any more.

The narrator spoiled the story.

The story is sweet, but the narrators voice is grating, the characters were read as weak and insipid when they were anything but. Disappointing. Was improved when sped up.

Nice story - weak narration

Surprisingly, not the worst narrator out there in the world of Regency Romance, but certainly not the best!

I found the story hit and miss, I certainly enjoyed all of the characters, but they weren’t particularly well flushed out and, even though I knew that it was a Regency tale, it really could have been dropped off right into our 21st century, for all the adherence to the 19th century mores that was paid.

It was becoming long winded and I was happy to get to the end of it. Notwithstanding that, I felt that it could have benefited from an epilogue.

Blah!

A different narrator would have made more of this story. I found the mispronunciations and breathy voice irritating. The story, however, was worth enduring the narrator,

Misplaced pride

The narrator totally spoiled the entire book. So slow and breathy, terrible. A shame as it’s a good story, if you don’t get bored and drift off after listening more than five minutes!

Good story but terrible narrator!
