About this listen

Both a cracking tale of horror and deeply audacious account of the human psyche, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has continued to thrill and fascinate since it was first published in 1886. Dr. Jekyll wants to rid his soul of evil, and in doing so creates the monstrous alter ego Mr. Hyde. As time goes on he slides increasingly into this other side of his personality until it finally takes over, with disastrous consequences. As the determined Mr. Utterson races to uncover the secret of the good Dr. Jekyll's sinister new companion, the cozy Victorian world of wealth and comfort is discovered to be under siege.

This is one of the best audio books I've ever heard. It is also one of the best books I've ever read, the story is beautifully written, with wonderfully atmospheric descriptions of London, strongly drawn characters and a note of strained tension throughout that builds to a thrilling climax. It's a story that needs a confident narrator to do it justice and John Sessions does not disappoint. In fact, it was really through his rendition that I realised precisely how wonderfully written the book really is. I felt that I was listening to a play, the narration was so effective. Sessions adopts a measured, low tone for the most part, with a taut edge that erupts when the action requires, as well as perfectly-timed, often quite long, dramatic pauses, both of which devices serve very effectively to highlight the suspense. Each character's voice is distinct and, at times, suitably agonised, especially towards the end when Dr Lanyon is confronted by the malevolent Hyde. Hyde's voice might have been a little more evil. Highly recommended.

The main reason I bought this audiobook is because it is narrated by John Sessions, a peerless narrator and genuinely lovely human being. I loved his performance of this book, and find it fascinating how different readers can bring out different aspects of the same story.

Most people know the basic storyline of this book before they read it for the first time - that Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are the same person. Whilst listening to this I suddenly came to realise that when this book was first published, readers did not know that. The story is essentially a mystery, at the beginning we are not supposed to know the "twist", but simply to marvel at what hold the disreputable Mr Hyde could possibly have over the respectable Dr Jekyll. We're set up to hear a story of blackmail, so how amazing it must have been to get to the twist, when you had no idea what to expect when you started the book!

Made me re-evaluate the story.

This is brilliantly narrated. I though I knew this story but I really didn't. Enjoyable and engrossing from start to finish.
