Late one night a distraught young woman on the run begs Reverend Lucian Shaw for help, claiming she has been kidnapped and held against her will at Ravenswood, a remote and heavily guarded country house.
When she is later found dead in suspicious circumstances, Shaw enlists the help of Chief Inspector Ludd of the Suffolk Constabulary to investigate.
Ludd, however, comes up against a wall of silence and is soon ordered off the case. Somebody—somebody with power and influence—does not want anyone to know what goes on inside Ravenswood.
