Summary

Damien and Millie take on their most dangerous assignment yet.

After a string of arson fires drives migrant farm workers from their homes and threatens Millie’s daughter-in-law, Damien agrees to go undercover to infiltrate the white-supremacist, neo-Nazi militia responsible for the fires and unmask the identity of their leader.

Millie covers his absence by spreading the news that they have separated, while he travels back to Atlantic City. When Damien reappears in California, it’s in the guise of a former cop with neo-Nazi sympathies.

Left alone to run their detective agency while maintaining a brave front, Millie dives into an investigation of a friend of the new mayor of Carmel-by-the Sea, a local resident she suspects of being a Nazi war criminal in hiding.

The action is non-stop as Damien and Millie risk their lives to eradicate the spectre of violence and racism from their community.

Loved the dual narration of Tom Lennon

Husband and wife private detectives, Damien and Millie face their most insidious villain yet. Millie gets the opportunity to shine as a private investigator in her own right.

If you enjoy private eye mysteries with lots of action and suspense, you'll love "The Silver Star Caper,"

Brilliant finale

A last hurrah for Damien and Millie as Damien goes undercover and Millie searches for a Nazi war criminal masquerading as official in their county.

A wonderful conclusion with an imaginative storyline. If you haven't read any of the other stories, this will be fine as a standalone but I highly recomend reading all of the books in order so that you get the real flavour of characters entwined through all the books.

New series to me - slow start but got really good.

Both the narration and story were really good. My issue is at the beginning I wasn't sure what to expect and I almost stopped listening (but if you had listened/read the other books in the series I am sure it wouldn't have been an issue). Once it going with the story it was brilliant - and the two stories intertwined so well and the memories of Terezin were brilliantly captured and very well researched.

The narration really suited a detective novel.

I was given a free copy by the book club - audible listeners but this in no way influenced my review.

Fantastic

This series just gets better and better. When you welcome back characters as if they're old friends you know the author's characterisation is top notch. Damien and Millie have a very tough assignment and it was less 'cosy' and more nerve jangling at times. But with Hershey in the mix I felt the comfort of a much loved 4-legged friend. The 1980s feel like 100 years ago when listened to in the 2020s. How much easier would their lives have been if they could have made a quick call? Or sent an email? I really hope this series runs and runs as I love it. Great narration, as always, from Tom Lennon

The Perfect Listen

One of the Damien Dickens stories and is all good and this one is no exception. These are quite dated not the modern mobile and broadband era but that makes for good old fashion detection work. The story started with Damien & Millie having a big row so that the next door can hear which when you have listened to a few of their novels your instincts quickly tell you they are on a case, and it's that hush hush.
In this tale, they are leading separate lives Damien a biker out of work and Millie's left to work in the Detective Agency but during her time alone she gets torn between her husband's hush hush case and her daughter-in-law's dilemma.
This one I thought was much tenser than some of the others, but all the D D mysteries are good, and as always the narrator Tom Lennon done a superb job.

Excellent!

It was great to catch up with the exploits of Damien and Milly in this the sixth book in the series. Having listened to all the previous ones I was excited to get this one. It is fast paced and edge of the seat stuff all the way through. Once again our crime busting pair face bullets, bombs and total baddies in the Silver Star Caper. Tom Lennon does a brilliant job of the narration really bringing each character to life, well recommended.
I was kindly given this book by the author and leave this voluntary and unbiased review.

More of this please!

The Silver Star Caper was my first encounter with Damien and Millie Dickens and books by Phyllis Entis. The 80's setting was a bonus, it gave a nice old school edgy atmosphere to the story, which was gripping and kept me cleaning just to have an excuse for listening longer. The characters soon felt like friends, with their hearts in the right place, in this book sometimes empathically pushed to the limit.
In short, great reading, love to know more and will definatly check out the earlier books.
