About this listen

Senior Detective Kate Wakeland senses dark undercurrents in her beloved small town, Tallman's Valley.

She's glimpsed a silent town lying beneath the valley " a place where the streets and landscapes are the same, but where daylight never reaches. But as Kate begins to investigate the silent town, a shocking multiple shooting occurs on the mountain that bookends the valley, Witness Mountain.

Kate is forced to suspend all else and focus on the case at hand. How did a frail, elderly man manage to shoot his family? Did he have the help of his grandson, a teenage boy who can't account for his whereabouts that morning?

The height of a devastating fire season hinders Kate at every turn. Through the smoky veil hanging in the valley, Kate begins to suspect a connection between the Witness Mountain shootings and the silent town.

But the dangers are far greater than Kate ever imagined. There are people who will kill to conceal what they know and what they've done.

Great series. Such a good story. Brilliant red herrings and twists. Love this author. Narrator does a great job and makes all the characters believable- except a slightly dodgy Irish accent and very dodgy English accent that sounded like the chimney sweep off Mary Poppins! Ignorable for the story though. Worth the credit without doubt.

I like following the characters and how the Story brought them to life and it's not a sickly love story

First of all, let me say that I know not everyone finds Caroline Lee's narration great but I do. The characters' voices are clearly distinguishable but it's the quality of the narration that really makes the listening experience - there's something about the narrator's tone and pace that really helps set the scene and take the listener to the events.
The book itself is superb. It brings together the series by showing the complexity of the characters as well as the histories. At no point did I think 'it's too long' - the almost 16 hours of listening was enthralling. A great story and one that will stay with me for some time to come. For goodness sake though, listen to the other two by Anne Taylor first.

An excellent novel that rounds off the trilogy

Caroline Lee makes this well thought out detective thriller a thoroughly enjoyable treat! .

Brilliant narration!

Some of the men's voices were indistinguishable from the women's and I was confused as to who was speaking. But the worst was the so-called Irish accent. It was so horrifically bad I dreaded that character arriving in a scene. I would have rated the story much higher if the performance had not been so bad.

It tied up all the story lines from the first books.

A fabulous interwoven plot. I sat in my car outside my house for over an hour to hear the ending!
The narrator was excellent apart from the terrible Irish accent which was quite off putting.
Definitely worth it though!

Multilayered and mesmerising

You should read the trilogy!! Fabulous narrator and story set in a world any one of us could inhabit. Loved getting to know the tenacious Detective Kate and her family!

Outstanding!

Good story. I have only given 3 stars for performance because the narrators attempt at Scottish, English and Irish accents were not great.
