About this listen

Dina has unwillingly inherited her mother's gift: the ability to elicit shamed confessions simply by looking into someone's eyes. To Dina, however, these powers are not a gift but a curse. Surrounded by fear and hostility, she longs for simple friendship.

I adored this book as a kid, and was delighted to find it as an adult on Audible. Loved the story as much as ever and really enjoyed diving back into this world. Excited to read the rest all over again too!

I love this story, and recommend the book in any format - just a shame the narrator sounds as though they're whispering most of the time in this audiobook. Very breathy and quiet, with sudden loud declarations that don't seem to be sound balanced.
On the plus side, it does give the sense of being told a secret by a child, which is in keeping with the story- and she has some lovely different character voices too.
All in all a good re-telling.
