About this listen
The year is 1367, and the people of York are suffering. Not only has the harvest failed, but the plague has returned. In the midst of this, scandal threatens St Leonard's Hospital, which is struggling to stay solvent and has suffered thefts. The deaths of several of its aged residents seems timely, for their care has long exceeded the sums they bequeathed. Rumours start to fly that their deaths were no accident. . . . Owen Archer, already fully occupied helping his wife Lucie, the city's apothecary, deal with the plague, is forced to investigate.

My problem with this instalment of the Owen and Lucy Archer series was the number of characters heads we inhabited. I’m all for focalised points of view but there were times when it drifted into head hopping, particularly with the minor characters. Surely these would have been better delivered from a third person perspective? There were snippets of different POV thrown in for perhaps a paragraph and muddled into some one else’s perspective.
It all became a tad confusing and I found myself thinking ‘Wait… what… who is this?’
I’ll probably download the next in the series in the hope this text was a bit of an aberration.
