About this listen

"The Reformatory is one of those books you can't put down. Tananarive Due hit it out of the park."—Stephen King

A gloriously creepy Deep South horror story based on the infamous Dozier School for boys, perfect for fans of The Only Good Indians and Nothing But Blackened Teeth.

Jim Crow Florida, 1950.

Twelve-year-old Robert Stephens Jr., who for a trivial scuffle with a white boy is sent to The Gracetown School for Boys. But the segregated reformatory is a chamber of horrors, haunted by the boys that have died there.

In order to survive the school governor and his Funhouse, Robert must enlist the help of the school's ghosts–only they have their own motivations...

This book as of it self is a brilliant story. But the history in it made me research and look up information about the school and some of the noted people. The history .. It’s horrifying and unbelievable but yet so true and heartbreaking. I have already added the recommended books from the authors note at the end. Absolutely brilliant. This will sit with me for a long time … as it should.

One of the most incredible books I've ever read. Deep and rich. Characters you really invest in. Paced perfectly. Gut wrenching in places. You can feel the author's care for this story all throughout, it's so well written. Utterly fantastic.

A rich, rich text

Filled with all sorts of horrors, both tangible and less so - it’s a harrowing representation of what actually went down not that long ago

Exceptionally Good Book

This is a story about injustice, friendship and family love. A story that will stay with you long after you have read it, highly recommend.

I couldn't put this down at all. Absolutely fantastic read, and very informative on how the time period was back then

Fantastic, beautiful book

A strong narrative, unforgettable characters and an important message about the horrors of injustice make this novel a must read.

Mesmerising story

A fabulously well written and narrated story of a horrific time that even though I'm no way whatever a racist in any way, it made me ashamed to be a white man. As my dearly beloved used to say, "we are all pink inside".

Wheras times have changed for the better for people of all colours and religions, the world is still an ugly place full of nasty, spiteful and evil people. I pray for a giant meteorite or plague to wipe us all out, because it simply isn't a world of kindnesses and never will be.

Brilliant novel,a must read/listen

Absolutely brilliant. Top 3 book of the year for me. I listened every chance I got. The narrator was perfect and brought all the characters to life with ease.
Strongly recommend this book.

Terrifying, sickening, unputdownable

I loved the writing and the character details and development. This was stressful and horrifying. The horror was not supernatural but the system and horrors of Jim Crow and institutions

Stressful, disturbing, important

Nicely read and a very good story, well worth a credit. This 15 word rule from Audible is us silly for a review.
