Easy read/listen

Great characters - loads of repetition from the first part of the series - very messy historical details - action at Polish border still patrolled by the Poles yet Stalin does not want to provoke the Germans - man with a soviet passport and no visa travelling across Poland and Czechoslovakia with no restrictions and border guards just waving him in …..well … it is clearly not a history handbook/essay
It is fun I am enjoying the series - great performance

Totally enthralling from start to finish

Where does The Red Coffin rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

About 2nd favourite

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The true historical detail that is entwined with the fiction

What about Steven Pacey’s performance did you like?

Steven Pacey is probably the VERY BEST narrator on Audible - Spot on with his accents, timing and annunciation. I would buy any book narrated by him.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The Red Coffin - all secrets are finally unearthed.

Any additional comments?

Very exciting fiction, combined with true historical facts. Steven Pacey is, as usual, superb to listen to.

Sam Eastland loses the plot

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Started off well enough, but the premise that one man, could drive a T34 inside a truck across western russia, and then drive across the Polish border in the T34 and this would prompt Germany to invade the Soviet Union, is too far fetched.

Germany that still does not have incorportaed the Skoda arms factories into the Reich, nor does it have a land border with Soviet Union. Unless of course Poland sides with Germany.

Stalin according to Sam Eastland is bending backwards to appease Hitler, so the Soviet union can prepare for war. This was true in 1941, after the fall of France, up until then the boot was on the other foot. The Red Army and Air force at this time are the strongest in the world. Far from a policy of apeasement, Stalin is fighting a proxy war against Germany in Spain and in 1940, moves into western Romania within striking distance the only oil fields Germany needs to fight the western allies. A move that confirms Hitlers belief that Soviet Union will strike against Germany soon.

Also the T34 cannot be driven and fought by one man, there are no seperate drivers and machinegunner compartments, the crew is not 5 but 4.

Has The Red Coffin put you off other books in this genre?

No

fine easy listen.

The book is frustrating, although it has interesting premises I just found it too simplistic. The main character is supposed to be this great investigator who everyone thinks is special but he never really solves anything just follows the events.
Pekkala are presented as the top man that never misses details yet gets easily fooled by known criminal.
it's short and the story moves at a reasonable speed .
it's fine for an easy listen, but don't expect suspense or any deep characters.
