Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

When Gervase Frant, Seventh Earl of St Erth, returns at last from Waterloo to his family seat at Stanyon, he enjoys a less than welcome homecoming. Only Theo, a cousin even quieter than himself, is there to greet him - and when he meets his stepmother and young half-brother he detects open disappointment that he survived the wars. But the dangers of the Lincolnshire countryside are quite different to those of the battlefield.

Georgette Heyer was the most successful and best-loved novelist of her day and The Quite Gentleman displays all the skills which won the hearts of her large and enduring audience.

wonderful

I loved this. Marvellous story of course but the narrator was exceptional. He brought out the humour and romance with a wide range of voices and accents but he also found the right tone for the more serious moments. it was a delight throughout.

Another reviewer has said the narrator does not know how to pronounce swoon. I think this does him a disservice. Where the character knows how to say swoon, that is what Heyer writes and what he says. There are a couple of characters who do not know how to pronounce the word, so Heyer writes "swound" and this is what the narrator says.

I have lost count of the number of times i have listened to this reading because it is such a delight and so sensitively and skilfully read. The command of all the different voices is faultless. I have not noticed any flaws.

Heyer at her best

This was narrated well. There is an unconventional heroine who is more practical than pretty. There is a bit of a whodunit mystery too

Excellent story more mystery than romance

Loved the story which is totally engaging. The usual Heyer bubbly Regency romance with characters you readily care for overlaid with attempts at murder. Even her smallest characters live and breathe on the page. The only jarring note is the accent of the reader. It is perhaps unfortunate that the story is set at Stanyon Castle as it means the reader's "Cassell" and "Laff" are repeated all too often.

Likeable

I liked this book very much. I thought the narrator did a great job. The story isn't one of my absolute favourites written by Heyer, but like all Heyer books it's worth a read and very enjoyable.

Heyer does it again !

As with The Reluctant Widow, one cannot understand that this has not been one of the popular of her romance novels. I loved it. It reminded me so much of Persuasion- with Drewcilla and Gervais. And the suspense was even better this time.

The narrator could have done a better job with altering his voice, sometimes it was not so easy to hear who said what. But overall a really good experience.

Most enjoyable

Having read this story very many years go, and enjoyed, this version did not at all disappoint. It was well narrated and had me listening at every spare moment. A romance and a mystery all in one, a delightful escape. Georgette Heyer at her best.

excellent telling of an old favourite

A favourite book for more than 30 years, enriched with a top job by the narrator. Every character is sensitively brought to life with individual voices and a variety of very credible accents. I had a real sense that the narrator knew the story inside out and enjoyed the telling.
