As Basil Hallward, an aspiring artist, puts a few touches on a portrait of his handsome young friend Dorian Gray, Gray wishes that the portrait might grow old while he remains forever young. While Dorian Gray spends his life pursuing fresh experiences and new sensations, his looks do not change. However, the portrait, secretly hidden in the attic of his residence and with which he has grown increasingly obsessed, does. More and more, as Dorian struggles to hide his true identity, the portrait reveals his progressive pathway to dissolution.

It is such a pleasure to listen to a book written by a superb author. Oscar Wilde's witticism is found throughout the story rendering the story a wonder to listen to.
Although I really like Wilde's work in general ,this particular title is filled with philosophy, great adjectival phrases and memorable descriptions to wonderful effect.

Stephen Fry is one of the best narrator's I have heard - the book " lived " as a result of a good actors voice.

Came to this after reading Julian Barnes’ Man in the Red Coat, having been fascinated by Barnes’ discussion of Wilde’s trial and the scandalous book, À rebours (thought to be the mysterious book of vice Lord Henry gives to Dorian). The performance is wonderful, Fry’s voice, timing and characterisation brings the somewhat stagey characters to life. I was utterly gripped, but it is undeniably an odd book, by turns hilarious witticisms and society snobbery, gothic novel and philosophical discussion. Dorian is a strange antihero, a beautiful vacuum, cruel through callous vanity rather than for gain, he is a strangely (and obviously intentionally) empty protagonist, and even Fry seems to struggle to engage with the blankness. There is however a wealth of lines to read between, the artist beguiled by beauty, the enviability of youth, tacit acknowledgment of homosexuality in a time when such words were never put in print. Well worth the listen, but perhaps not the usual gothic adventure fare that one might expect.

Everyone should, from time to time, come back to classics like this just to remind themselves what a perfect book is like. The language is sublime. Almost every line could be a quotation that one would like to carry around forever in one's head. Stephen Fry clearly loves the book and the language and brings it to life. If there was a 10 star rating, this book and narrator would have it. Loved and savoured every minute of it.
