About this listen

In the spring of 1685, Lord Hugo Everly, ardent supporter of the Protestant upstart the Duke of Monmouth, vanishes without a trace just before the Monmouth Rebellion, leaving future generations forever baffled as to what might have become of him.

In 2013, while visiting Everly Manor as part of her job as a location scout for a film production company, Neve Ashley stumbles onto a secret passage that leads her into the 17th century and straight into the path of the ill-fated lord. Neve is able to return safely to her own time, but she can't forget the man she met or the fate that's about to befall him. Against her better judgment, Neve decides to go back and warn Hugo of impending danger, not realizing that she's walking into danger herself, for history is never straightforward, and people's motives not always what they appear to be. Taken hostage by the very man she was trying to save, Neve is trapped in the 17th century, her fate now intertwined with that of her captor, and the future something that neither one of them could have envisioned.

meant as a stop gap for Outlander and couldn't stop!!! can't wait to see what Jem gets up too. wish he was an audio book!

The narrator is awful, sometimes sounds so posh it puts you off, pronounciation varies from slang back to posh

Story is ok

Really off prononciations (era, Charles, off etc) which grates/amuses but is distracting an a pity. The use of Americanisms is also contradictory to the setting and narrator and jars

The story line of time travel to the historical past which the author used as backdrop to the plot was not well or accurately developed. Neither was the experience of time travel convincing. The plot fell apart at points particularly at the end and moved between a bodice riper fantasy that was uncomfortable to read and characters that were stereotypical and wooden so not well developed enough for me to care what happened to them. Worst of all was the narrator who is in desperate need of a voice coach and a much better director. The primary role of all narrators is to recount or tell a narrative, which can make or break story telling, particularly if they fail to narrate different accents convincingly and accurately so that the reader is taken into the story not left cringing on the margins. The narrator of a story has more power than the other characters, because they control what gets said and what gets left out. Not just the words of the author but how they are said. I won’t be listening to any more books in this series

Would you listen to another book narrated by Eva Kaminsky?

Not if she puts on a cod English accent, unless she learns how to do it properly. Her acting is fine, but her pronunciation is painful.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Neither. It was entertaining.

Good story, uneven narration

Poor research regarding English pronunciation and use of American words, e.g Creek instead of stream, butt instead of rear/behind/bottom-Butt is English is a water butt or barrel.
Good attempt at RP English accent but occasionally slipped a 1950’s accent as already pointed out by other reviewers.

The reader had a very strange accent - which is sometimes annoying - the story itself is good and an easy listen

Great story but very odd pronunciations <br />

The general storyline is very interesting, with good descriptions, but although the narrator has a soft voice, her very 1940’s newsreel accent along with American words, such as fall for autumn and pronunciation of simple English works, naïvety, pronounced as ‘naïvitay’ is very irritating and off putting, it’s neither one language or the other. Having said that though, the story line is good enough that I wish to continue the rest of the series for its conclusion.

A reasonable story ruined totally by the awful narrator. She mispronounced words (too many to mention) and was completely unrealistic. A shame but I will definitely never listen to a book that she narrates again. Not sure that the story is strong enough for a follow on book which I believe there is.
