About this listen

It is a sad fact of life that if a young woman is unlucky enough to come into the world without expectations, she had better do all she can to ensure she is born beautiful. To be handsome and poor is misfortune enough; but to be both plain and penniless is a hard fate indeed.

In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Mary is the middle of the five Bennet girls and the plainest of them all, so what hope does she have? Prim and pious, with no redeeming features, she is unloved and seemingly unlovable.

The Other Bennet Sister shows another side to Mary. An introvert in a family of extroverts, a constant disappointment to her mother, who values beauty above all else, fearful of her father’s sharp tongue, with little in common with her siblings - is it any wonder she turns to books for both company and guidance? And, if she finds her life lonely or lacking, that she determines to try harder at the one thing she can be: right.

One by one, her sisters marry - Jane and Lizzy for love, Lydia for some semblance of respectability - but Mary, it seems, is destined to remain single and live out her life at Longbourn, at least until her father dies and the house is bequeathed to the reviled Mr Collins.

But when that fateful day finally comes, she slowly discovers that perhaps there is hope for her after all.

Simultaneously a wonderfully warm homage to Jane Austen and a delightful new story in its own right, Janice Hadlow's The Other Bennet Sister is, at its heart, a life-affirming tale of a young woman finding her place in the world. Witty and uplifting, it will make you feel - and cheer - for Mary as you never have before.

I enjoyed this so much. To begin with it is a very clever parallel to a plot we know well from Pride and Prejudice. It then continues on from where that plot ends and gathers a huge momentum, with hugely enjoyable insights into life during that period en route. Very clever and well done. I will read or watch P&P very differently next time.

The narrator I felt got Mary just right.

Here’s to Mary!

This was just perfect and was so well crafted a novel that captures the ambiance of the original

Perfection

I thoroughly enjoyed this take of the well-known Bennet family told through the eyes of Mary. With her sisters married, what becomes of her and will she find her own happiness?

Told in a style akin to Austen, we follow her journey as she grows and navigates the trials and tribulations of a single lady with no fortune, with her considerable intellect but lacking typical beauty.

I’d be happy to listen again, as it very much complements the original story, imagining the continuation of the life of our beloved characters, and not jarring in the slightest as might be feared.

The narration was good - the characters were excellent, but I found the narrative voice a bit modern for my taste.

All in all, excellent, and one to add to my classical collection.

A wonderful tribute to Jane Austen

While the line between tribute and plagiarism is sometimes thin, this book is at its worst a charming exercise in stylistic mimicry. At its best it shows a kindness to Austen's comic characters that the lady herself denied them. And as this book will tell you both in form and substance, it is only when you meet someone with generosity and genuine interest that they can show themselves to their best advantage.

A warm and kind book

I loved this book. It was well written, with language appropriated for the era, and it was beautifully read.

Loved this book. The language and the way it was written was so lovely to listen to. I love the original story but you could listen and enjoy stand alone. Mary is such a great character and not your normal heroine. Will listen to it again I’m sure.

If you are a fan of pride and prejudice it’s a must

A good story, at times it was nearly Jane Austen writing, but the style was not always consistent.
