as the book covers a huge geographical area and attempts a sweep of a few thousand years, the shifts from places and scenarios can be confusing.

that aside, this book has fascinating tit-bits of history and gives keen readers leads to research many different topics.

someone else should have read this book though. if you're aren't accustomed to an Indian accent and its novel way of pronunciation, you're going to struggle.

This is an absorbing book for someone who is not a historian and wants a different take on Indian history. Yes, despite the book’s claim to be a history of the Indian Ocean rim, it’s very Indi-centric, other countries being treated as marginal to the towering central actor. Despite this and other flaws, it was worth the effort to braved the truly terrible narration to squeeze all the juice I could from this book. Audible please check that narrators can pronounce basic names and understand the significance and inflection of what they are reading.
