Set at the turn of the century, this is one of Catherine Cookson's most unusual novels, powerfully portraying a woman dangerously driven by desire and ambition.

Critic reviews

"Humour, toughness, resolution and generosity are Cookson virtues.... In the specialised world of women's popular fiction, Cookson has created her own territory." (Helen Dunmore, The Times)

Loved this!

In two for one sale but one of the best books I’ve had for a while. Great characters, loved the humour and twists. The Daisy yarns were wonderful.

The Obsession

This was a great story and narrated excellently and with passion by
Susan Jameson. Have read Catherine Cookson books over the years, but have enjoyed the Audible version bringing the story to life.

excellent read

Another great Catherine Cookson read. All the usual twists and turns and you're never quite sure where it's going which makes you want to listen to the next chapter...

Good old-fashioned Catherine Cookson

The narrator is as always excellent (Susan Jameson). Enjoyable story, felt like a real Catherine Cookson, gritty and engrossing, genuine characters.

Catherine Cookson at her best!!!

What a wonderful story from Catherine Cookson, although a slight departure from her usual. The characters were believable and I felt myself drawn into their lives. I also enjoyed the narration which was delivered with ease.

Great Story, weird narration

As always, a great gripping story from Catherine Cookson, but unfortunately the narration was not quite right. The majority of the characters were in their twenties and thirties, but the narrator, thought emotive and effective, made every character sound like octogenarians from old 1940s films, or at some points like granny from Tweetie and Sylvester. The story was however strong enough to deal with this, and I couldn't stop listening.

Easy listening

Very Catherine Cookson. Well narrated. Ended a bit suddenly though. But I would recommend for a relaxing listen
