Summary

Exeter, 1195. Renovations at the new school in Smythen Street are disrupted by the discovery of a partially mummified corpse - and Sir John de Wolfe, the county coroner is called to investigate.

Richard de Revelle, founder of the school, immediately tries to blame Nicholas de Arundell, a young outlawed knight living rough on Dartmoor. As Sir John discovers, Nicholas has good reason to bear a grudge against the unscrupulous de Revelle. But is he really a killer?

With the victim's identity unknown and the motive a mystery, the murder remains unsolved. But then comes a second death - and Sir John is forced to track down the 'noble outlaw' in order to find the answers...

Devonshire derring-do!

I really enjoyed this book.
It was interesting and contained many historical facts I didn’t know regarding ancient law . I have walked the streets and lanes mentioned in the book whilst listening and have really felt part of the story. Thank you Mr Knight for setting a really good murder mystery here in Devon !! More please!!!!

Brilliant!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this because it has great characters, lots of suspense and drama and is really well narrated and written.

Who was your favorite character and why?

That would be the outlaw Sir Nicholas. He reminded me of Robin Hood and I've always loved him.

What about Paul Matthews’s performance did you like?

He gave each character a distinctive voice without overdoing it. I've never heard him before but I look forward to hearing him read more of these books.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The sword-fighting scene was very dramatic. I was really tense throughout.

Any additional comments?

This is the first book I've read from this series. I really like the fact that the hero had some flaws. It made him more human. Apart from being a great mystery story, this book depicts life in medieval England really well. I really felt like I was in the characters' world. If I have one complaint, it's that the Author has a really annoying habit of giving away what happens in each chapter with their titles. That's just unnecessary. He occasionally does it in the story too, which does ruin the suspense a bit. Still, I couldn't put the book down and I look forward to reading more from this series.

Living History

I love the Croner John stories as they not only provide an enjoyable "Who Dunnit" they give a brilliant insight of life in the 12th Century.
Once again though why is it that audible.co.uk never make books of a series available in chronological order or for that matter as a complete series. Out of the dozen or so in this series they have only listed books 4 & 5.

Excellent Story

Well written and well read. This has been a most enjoyable experience. The setting and historical detail are most interesting and the characters well drawn.
I will be buying the other book by this author and narrator.
