Summary

As the Second World War draws to a close, Intelligence Officer Gus Clifton surprises his sisters when he introduces Krista - the German wife whom he has married secretly in Berlin.

Krista is clearly devastated by her experiences at the hands of the allies, but Gus's sisters can only see the enemy he has brought under their roof. Haunted by passion and betrayal, these damaged souls are propelled towards a spectacular resolution.

Really enthralling post war tale

Well written and performed with enough intrigue to keep you listening well into the night.
Really good on post War Britain and it’s privations and prejudices.

The New Mrs Clifton

What made the experience of listening to The New Mrs Clifton the most enjoyable?

A well written book and read very well.

What did you like best about this story?

A few twists and turns in a tale set in a bleak time just after the second world war.

Have you listened to any of Julie Teal’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I felt very sad to hear what a bad state German was in after the war and how badly the women in particular were treated. The privations suffered by the English too with the food shortages were hard to comprehend.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed it very much and will recommend it as a Reading Club book.

Took a long time to get into this book

It took me ages to get into this book and at first I found it depressing and lack lustered. However I persevered and ended up finding this book very satisfying, around a harrowing wartime story.

Interesting

I enjoyed listening to the book and the insights it gave me about how German women suffered during WW2.

Mrs Clifton

I had never heard of this author and was in two minds to purchase it. The title and cover looked a bit chit lit which was a little off putting, but so
pleased I did.

The first chapter sett the scene of a young couple buying their first house when they started work in the garden they find a body under a tree. Then your back in time to post war London and the tale begins.

Great characters who were all engaging with their individual foibles. The story slowly unravelled around the lives of the three siblings Gus, Julia and Tilly Clifton, not excluding the mysterious Krista who is the new German wife of Gus.

It was a really good listen and kept me doing the housework long after it needed doing. Enjoy.

Not what I expected…

but so good! I wasn’t sure about the narration at first but realised the voice actually fitted the era and it grew on me. A powerful story with many layers, themes and surprises. All the characters are written with depth. I can almost hear lots of book club discussions! It will keep me thinking for quite some time

Gripping read

Very well narrated and storyline kept me guessing throughout as I didn't know where it would lead. Gave a good insight into the aftermath of war and treatment of women in Germany and prejudices in Britain. Would definitely listen to others by this author.

More complex than it initially seemed.

I listened to this book because it was chosen by a book group I belong to, I wouldn't have chosen it otherwise.
It took about a third of the book to have me gripped, at times the story was slow moving, then I had to hear it through to the end.
Overall I enjoyed the story and didn't guess the plot twists. The author left some scenes hanging at the end of chapters unresolved which was frustrating. I'm not sure I would choose to read another book by this author.
