About this listen
Best-selling author and award-winning journalist Isabel Hardman investigates how nature and exercise can boost mental wellbeing.
In 2016, Isabel Hardman's mind, in her own words, 'stopped working' as she fell prey to severe depression and anxiety. She took time off on long-term sick leave and despite several relapses has returned to work in much better health. She has since become one of the country's most prominent public voices on mental health issues.
She credits her recovery to her passion for exercise, nature and the great outdoors - from horse-riding and botany to cold-water swimming and running. In The Natural Health Service, she draws on her own personal experience, interviews with mental illness sufferers and psychologists and the latest research to examine the role wildlife and fresh air can play in helping anyone cope with mental illness.
Straight-talking, thoroughly researched and compassionate, this important and often funny audiobook will fascinate anyone touched by a mental health condition, whether themselves or through the experiences of a loved one.

A practical and different perspective
I've been a Spectator subscriber for many years so had come across Isabel's work as a journalist previously but her honest and practical examination of using the natural world as a kind of distraction therapy was intelligent, unique and extremely interesting. There is a freemasonry among those who have suffered from anxiety or mental health issues and so much of this book will resonate with you if you are a metaphorical member. I particularly liked her honesty (I can't hack mindfulness and mind programming cd's either) and the way she reads is a joy, extremely engaging and informative. My particular therapeutic obsession is ornamental grasses, so calming! Thank you Isabel for this insightful listen.
