Just before Christmas, 1996, a beautiful French woman - the wife of a movie mogul - was brutally murdered outside of her holiday home in a remote region of West Cork, Ireland. The crime was reported by a local journalist, Ian Bailey, who was at the forefront of the case until he became the prime murder suspect. Arrested twice, he was released without charge.

This was the start of a saga lasting decades with twists and turns and a battle for justice in two countries, which culminated in the 2019 conviction of Bailey - in his absence - by the French Criminal court in Paris. But it was up to the Irish courts to decide whether he would be extradited to serve a 25-year prison sentence.

I had been really looking forward to this audiobook but I was so disappointed! The writing is dreadful; it reminds me of school essays written to fulfil a word count. This, combined with narration below any acceptable standard renders the text incoherent beyond redemption. The writer seems credulous, biased and downright petty and spiteful at times. I persevered almost to the end, as I was interested in the case, but I can't bring myself to listen to any more.

I was extremely disappointed with this effort. It is completely one sided. it comes across as a promotional appeal on behalf of Official Ireland and France. There is zero background on Sophie or her husband or her lover. No other suspects are considered despite asides being made of disputes with neighbours and night prowlers.
it seems obsessed with denigrating IB in every way possible. Surely IB would write a book himself if all he wanted notoriety and money.

One Sided

This book is terrible - I can’t actually believe it got published or that the author hasn’t been sued. Far from being investigative journalism it assumes from the outset that one suspect did it even stating things no-one can possibly know. It’s so inept it’s like a child has written it with phrases such as ‘the liar Bailey’ and so on.

Nor is there a basic understanding of structure - it just launches into an attack from the off in an astonishingly amateurish way. It doesn’t seem to have been properly proofread either as it is peppered with minor inconsistencies such as Sophie wearing a shirt and leggings later becoming Sophie wearing a T-shirt and long-johns.

I’m wondering if this is a vanity-publishing effort as it certainly doesn’t read like a properly authored and edited book.

Finally, and this is really a minor point compared to everything else wrong with this book, the narration is poor - the reader has a dull, droning voice.

Honestly, just don’t bother with this, it’s dreadful.

Tedious narration. Repetitive. Biggest criticism is that it is a wholly prejudiced account of this tragic affair. Author is convinced of Bailey's guilt in the absence of anything other than, weak circumstantial hearsay evidence and rumour and refuses to consider alternatives. Not proper investigative journalism.
