Summary

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet.

On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport. Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer who is flying east for her much anticipated wedding. Dr Ben Payne has just wrapped up a medical conference and is also eager to return home to Jacksonville, Florida, for a slate of surgeries he has scheduled for the following day.

When the last outgoing flight is cancelled due to a broken deicer and a forthcoming storm, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the weather front. And when the pilot says the single engine prop plane can fit one more, Ben offers the seat to Ashley. Then the unthinkable happens. The pilot has a heart attack midflight, and the plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness - one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Ben, who has broken ribs, and Ashley, who suffers a terrible leg fracture, along with the pilot's dog, are faced with an incredibly harrowing battle to survive. Ben records messages to his beloved wife on a small tape recorder; seeing his devotion, Ashley wonders if she has rushed into her engagement. As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival becomes increasingly perilous. How will they make it out of the wilderness? And if they do, how will this experience change them?

Read by John Chancer.

Impressive and moving

I had watched the movie before I knew about the book. A moving story of loss and resistance. Thank you.

Claustrophobic and interesting but far fetched

Given there's only two real characters in this novel, author Charles Martin does a not bad job developing their roles.

The story surrounds Dr Ben Payne and writer Ashley Knox, who get caught up in a plane crash in the remote icy mountains of the High Uintas Wilderness. Both quite seriously injured, they attempt to battle all odds to survive.

Although the setting is well laid out, the actual plot and dialogue is slightly hyperbolic, and the long-winded explanations of love are rather sappy. The female characters are written as if swooning at Dr Payne's every beck and call. So while the novel began as a gripping survivalist plot, it falls into a wishy washy romance trap and ultimately ends up on the ash heap of almost good stories.

brilliant and deeply romantic....

easy listening, with beautiful progression. nothin tenuous or difficult, while still rich and complex. stirs that 'quiet place where dreams exist'

Couldn’t put it down

I loved this book. The voice reading it is a little tedious when he does the female voices but is otherwise good. I could hardly bear to stop listening and had it on through my earphones whenever I wasn’t working or sleeping! Not the predictable ending I expected either which was refreshing.

Worth listening to.

it was a moving book. So different to the film. I enjoyed it. my only reservation is John Chancer's reading of Ashley she sounded inauthentic wheras Ben was spot on.

Loved it!

It gripped me all the way through. Would they both survive or not? I had hoped they would but there was that chance they wouldn't. A chance meeting on a snowy night, leads them to analyse their lives as the characters try to survive. The summary does give a clear picture of the story, so I won't
go over that, but it is the ending that surprised me. I never expected that, though there are hints to it along the way you realise afterwards.
What I am disappointed with is after reading the synopsis of the film... a fantastic book story is totally changed in the film, even down to character names. I was so looking forward to the film but now feel I don't want to watch it as I'll be saying too often that wasn't in the book.

As always, better than the movie

Great story and plot but felt the acting needed a bit more to it. Don't watch the movie after, it sucked!
