About this listen
The new Hercule Poirot novel – another brilliant murder mystery that can only be solved by the eponymous Belgian detective and his ‘little grey cells’.
Since the publication of her first book in 1920, Agatha Christie wrote 33 novels, two plays and more than 50 short stories featuring Hercule Poirot. Now, for the first time ever, the guardians of her legacy have approved a brand new novel featuring Dame Agatha's most beloved creation.
Hercule Poirot's quiet supper in a London coffee house is interrupted when a young woman confides to him that she is about to be murdered. She is terrified, but begs Poirot not to find and punish her killer. Once she is dead, she insists, justice will have been done.
Later that night, Poirot learns that three guests at the fashionable Bloxham Hotel have been murdered, a cufflink placed in each one’s mouth. Could there be a connection with the frightened woman? While Poirot struggles to put together the bizarre pieces of the puzzle, the murderer prepares another hotel bedroom for a fourth victim…
In the hands of internationally bestselling author Sophie Hannah, Poirot plunges into a mystery set in 1920s London – a diabolically clever puzzle that can only be solved by the talented Belgian detective and his ‘little grey cells’.

I think Sophie Hannah does a clever thing by narrating the book from a new detectives point of view. You get a good glimpse at Poirot but with the flavour of the other characters personality. There is sufficient of the well-known Poirot foibles such as cleanliness and fastidiousness and self-adoration to make him familiar.
The narration is fabulous, Julian Rhind-Tutt reads just like he is the person telling you the story in the first person, and somehow manages to recreate the Poirot voice that David Suchet made famous. 10/10 for narrator, would listen to something read by him again just to hear the nice voice!
More plot than you shake a stick at....

The concept was good but the execution was sadly lacking. Some of the conclusions drawn by Poirot were not wholly believable from the evidence provided in the text and the reveal took more than 3 hours!!!
Julian Rhind-Tutt has a fabulous voice when he is acting but as he tried valiantly to put interest into each character his voice dwindled to such a level that I couldn't hear what he was saying.
I hope as this project progresses and more novels are written about our favourite Belgian detective, the author will develop a relationship with the character that will enrich our mutual experience. However I am reluctant to spend any more money on books by this author.
Disappointing

Good voice but...

All his annoying habits, and mannerisms are there just like Agatha created. The plot line is great and there are several twists which keep you guessing right to the end.I love the way it is done by writing a letter setting out everything that happened just like in the murder of Roger Ackroyd.
I love Poirot so it is fantastic to be able to read new stories.

Good old Poirot

Not the real thing

It started off pretty well with 3 bodies in a hotel.
Fee, the waitress in the cafe was a good character.
Bad points: far too long! The winding up took 3hrs.
Very repetitive and long winded in places.
Quite plodding and very dialogue based - no sense of the time or the place in which it was set.
Catchpole is a morose idiot - leaves bodies in a hotel overnight, ignores the most obvious points etc - how did he get to his current station?
Also, the explanation was too contrived - ok, suspension of disbelief but this was so twisted and minutely explained I was praying for it to end.
Sorry. I really wanted to like it as I love Golden Age fiction but not for me.
There’s probably a decent story in there somewhere…
