About this listen

The loss of her mother has left Kali McKenzie with too many unanswered questions. But while clearing out Elena's art studio, she finds a drawer packed with postcards, each bearing an identical one-line message from a Canadian gallery owner called Susannah Gillespie: thinking of you. Who is this woman and what does she know about Elena's hidden past?

Desperate to find out, Kali travels with her toddler, Finn, to Susannah's isolated home on a remote British Columbian island, a place of killer whales and storms. But as bad weather closes in, Kali quickly realises she has made a big mistake. The handsome and enigmatic Susannah refuses to talk about the past, and as Kali struggles to piece together what happened back in the 1970s, Susannah's behaviour grows more and more erratic. Most worrying of all, Susannah is becoming increasingly preoccupied with little Finn...

A tense, thrilling novel about a family divided by secrets, and the lengths a mother will go to protect her child.

I enjoyed this story, but at times the main character really annoyed me almost to the point of putting it down. but I'm glad I persevered as the storyline was really good.

great story

The response of the main character to the death of her mother is unbelievable but I envy her guts and would love to be able to respond to the situation in the same way! At times this character annoyed me, but this didn't prevent me from wanting to hear more. The elements that Kali found out about her mother's earlier life were very interesting as was her defiance to her father's insistence to leave well alone. I would have wanted to carry on finding out the truth. Some aspects at the end of the story became a little unbelievable but these excesses could be forgiven. A great escapist listen.

Unbelievable response!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a good plot and didn’t guess the ending. Really good narrator.

Excellent book

This was a good story but dragged out and was repetitive in many places. the baby voice was horrible and grated on my nerves. The story was wonderful and beautifully imaged. The main character, Kal, portrayed a level of fear and anticipation of fear that did not match her heroic action.

Great story but difficult to stay with at times.

Good story but quite repetitive in places. Sometimes a bit unbelievable. I wasn't keen on the narrator's voice.

Would you listen to The Missing One again? Why?

This is a good listen but the story line was dragged out a bit unnecessarily long

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Better variety of voices but okay

Nice but a bit dragged out

Very tense all the way, and not that predictable. Really good narration. Definitely worth listening time.

Heart rending

...but a quite extraordinarily annoying, self absorbed protagonist! The sort of person who, standing on a railway track with a train bearing down on her, just stands there, thinking, 'the train is BLUE...what does this MEAN?' And then somebody else would be injured rescuing her & the train be derailed, while she goes on wondering why her mother always cleaned the windows on a Wednesday. Infuriating! Rather tiresome whale related mysticism as well. Needed to know how it all ended, but it was a struggle to get there.

Very skilfully drawn threat & menace...

I couldn't stand it buy half way through i just wanted it to end. nothing much happens and is the charters didn't sound realistic. it starts well but the plot is dull.

so boring

Overwritten. About 14 hours longer than necessary. Narration was grating, especially for the voice of Finn.

Yawn
