About this listen
Gower Street, London, 1882: Sidney Grice, London's most famous personal detective, is expecting a visitor. He drains his fifth pot of morning tea, and glances outside, where a young, plain woman picks her way between the piles of horse-dung towards his front door. Sidney Grice shudders. For heaven's sake - she is wearing brown shoes. The Mangle Street Murders is for those who like their crime original, atmospheric, and very, very funny.

Superbly read second-rate story

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The story is good, the descriptions of everyday life in Victorian London are great, but unfortunately the book description "The Mangle Street Murders is for those who like their crime original, atmospheric, and very, very funny." is very misleading. This is a crime story in the Sherlock-Holmes style which is easy to listen to (written in a modern style). The harsh reality of Victorian London could make the book quite bleak and depressing, however the experience is lightened by a continuous sprinkling of statements about women (and horses) which are clearly silly and foolish to our modern minds - very welcome, amusing, but not "very, very funny". The central character is a young woman and it is her experience of Victorian London which drives the subplot, whilst the main story follows Sidney Grice's investigation of a murder. What about Emma Gregory’s performance did you like?
She has a calm, easy-to-listen-to delivery and a good range of different voices and accents for the other characters. Excellent.Victorian Crime Story (but not "very, very funny")
