Summary

The culmination of nearly 30 years of reporting on Donald Trump, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter David Cay Johnston takes a revealingly close look at the mogul's rise to power and prominence.

Covering the long arc of Trump's career, Johnston tells the full story of how a boy from a quiet section of Queens, New York, would become an entirely new and complex breed of public figure. Trump is a man of great media savvy, entrepreneurial spirit, and political clout. Yet, his career has been plagued by legal troubles and mounting controversy. From the origins of his family's real estate fortune to his own too-big-to-fail business empire; from his education and early career to his whirlwind presidential bid, The Making of Donald Trump provides the fullest picture yet of Trump's extraordinary ascendency.

Love him or hate him, Trump's massive influence is undeniable, and figures as diverse as Woody Guthrie (who wrote a scathing song about Trump's father) and Red Scare prosecutor Roy Cohn, mob bosses and high rollers, as well as the average American voter, have all been pulled into his orbit. Drawing on decades of interviews, financial records, court documents, and public statements, David Cay Johnston, who has covered Trump more closely than any other journalist working today, gives us the most in-depth look yet at the man who would be president.

An accurate portrait

A dispiriting recounting of the early career of this monstrous thug. Well researched and entertainingly performed.

Crazy man, story told in a fascinating way

Loved it.. Especially the early years and what made DT who he is... And the back and forth between the past and present help create a round image of the man

An overview of the life of a narcissist

As disturbing as expected, reiterating decades of reporting and investigation, which now seem to be deemed irrelevant to the character of a disordered and very dangerous person.

Sleazebag

A thoroughly disgusting man who shouldn't be trusted with bus fare let alone the office of President. Hope he is quickly relegated to the ash heap of history and America returns to sanity.

Lifts the lid on the corruption

You always approach books like this with some reservation as political exposè always have an agenda. This tale of essentially a mobster who is running for President just gives you case after case of law suits and dealings which are all a matter of public record. If you can vote in America listen to this book. People need to know and make up their minds with all the facts.

Great book - well worth a read

Wow - if the contents of this book are true then how on earth was such a man able to even run for president.
It shows how money and connections can help the utterly crooked side-step the law and bully the less fortunate.

Confirms our deepest concerns about Trump.

Having observed the US Election in 2016 with a combination of sadness and horror, I wanted more facts on Trump. My gut instincts were that he was a 'snake oil' salesman saying whatever his constituents wanted to hear as well as an outrageous narcissist completely consumed by himself and what is best for him.
This book helps to put proper investigated information on the table and not 'fake news' or alternative facts that has been so prevalent these last few months.
It will confirm your fears and we will continue to ask how such a great country as the USA has voted in such a con artist.

Great expose

It's almost too shocking to believe. Obviously the electorate in the U.S.A. didn't read it. Trump must easily be the most crooked politician of all time. A must read.
