About this listen
The Western Front, 1916. Private Percy Blakeney wakes up. He is lying on fresh spring grass. He can hear birdsong, and the wind in the leaves in the trees. Where have the mud, blood, and blasted landscape of No Man's Land gone?
Madison, Wisconsin, 2015. Cop Monica Jansson is exploring the burned-out home of a reclusive - some said mad, others dangerous - scientist when she finds a curious gadget: a box containing some wiring, a three-way switch and a potato. It is the prototype of an invention that will change the way Mankind views his world forever. And that's an understatement if ever there was one....
The Long Earth is the first novel in an exciting new collaboration between the creator of Discworld, Terry Pratchett, and the acclaimed SF writer Stephen Baxter.
©2012 Terry and Lyn Pratchett and Stephen Baxter (P)2012 Random House AudiobooksSome of the stuff on evolution is a little bit dodgy, but generally forgiveable. There isn't a great deal of action, but the story is about the journey: of both the protagonists and Earth societies in general. The book asks you to think about what changes might occur if many of us could suddenly travel between millions of Earths.
The book isn't written in Pratchett's style, but his contributions are evident. There is humour, insight, some sentimentality and a yearning for knowledge, which looks to me like the product of a strong collaboration. And since Baxter is involved, there's an inevitable reference to urinating in a space suit.
The narration is very good too. Don't expect this book to be entirely Pratchetty and don't forget that some Baxteritude is hardly a bad quality. I think it's a good result of a worthwhile collaboration and an interesting book with lots to think about.

I've never read any Stephen Baxter but have read plenty if Terry Pratchet and the two authors are a good compliment to each other. I only hope that the later books written after Pratchet's death retain the humour that hevhas injected into this first one.
Great start to a series

Would you try another book written by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter or narrated by Michael Fenton Stevens?
Happy enough with the narration. As for the writers - I'm not put off. This was enjoyable enough and a really interesting concenpt but didn't quite grab me enough to continue to with the series (which I've checked into and it sounds as though it gets worse).
Would you recommend The Long Earth to your friends? Why or why not?
No. To receommend a book, especially a series it needs to be something that captivates me, something I really can't let go. This was not one of those.Which character – as performed by Michael Fenton Stevens – was your favourite?
JoshuaWas The Long Earth worth the listening time?
Yes, I think so. As stated I did enjoy it and like some of the characters, was intrigued by the idea and some of the technology was interesting (the blimp).Any additional comments?
At the end of this book I was really in two minds about whether to continue to the next episode but I did a bit of research and found many people who been in the same position as me, went on reading and were disapppointed. I've no plans to continue with the series and I don't feel like I'm missing out.Enjoyed but won't follow the series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, because it's a straightforward tale about how weird our Universe might actually be, without the complexities that a friend might struggle with in some Space Operas.Who was your favorite character and why?
Has to be Lobsang - funny guy!Which character – as performed by Michael Fenton Stevens – was your favourite?
Lobsang again.Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this as it suits the audiobook format very well. It's an easy, yet interesting, listen and you might find yourself hooked quicker than you thought. Some clever ideas, well thought out and only a very few "Mmmmmms"Good Original Sci-Fi

Would you listen to The Long Earth again? Why?
No, entirely the wrong narrator. What was one of the most memorable moments of The Long Earth?
Too early to say; I've just started reading it, having thoroughly enjoyed The Long War - in print! What didn’t you like about Michael Fenton Stevens’s performance?
His voice and manner spoiled it such that I quit listenng and bought the e-book. Sorry Michael, but you'd do better narrating a thriller I feel. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No.Any additional comments?
Ask Stephen Fry to read the novel and republish.Great Story, but..

The narration is very good. Some of the accents are a little strange, but nothing off putting.
Overall a solid 4 star verging on 5 star audiobook.
Great premise.
