Never have I ever in all of my nearly 2000 audible books, have I loved a book so much that I am writing this review only half way through.

This is the first time I have come upon this author and I am eager to find more in the hope of unearthing another truly mesmeric story. Told most beautifully by an equally magical narrator, both story and story teller creating the perfect marriage to produce a tale so beguiling.

Get ready to transport to another time and place, where you can feel cold from the snow and smell the scent from the streets. prepare yourself for chills of a different nature as the story progresses and the fear of things unknown and unknowable begin to make themselves known.

At the roughly half way mark I am at once, eager to progress to find out where the story will lead and what will happen to our protagonist who is hard not to love, but also I don't want it to end.

I will add an update when I have finished the book, but as for now, don't waste another minute without this little treasure in your life. it's a credit well worth it xx

It took a little bit of time for me to feel engaged with the story but it was definitely worth it. This is a clever and engaging story about superstition and witchcraft with some well paced twists you'll deliberately see coming before the narrator and some sudden ones you won't. It feels very well researched even though real historical events are only on the periphery. Some people may call it a horror novel, but I'd argue it's more of a supernatural thriller.

I love the atmosphere and scene setting of this book, feels really like the 17th century came to life. The characterisation is great, even the Norfolk accent is good (Happisburgh aside). It all gets a bit daft towards the end though, the last third feel interminable. Just when you think things are wrapping up - off we go again. Like so many books these days it could really have done with a good edit.

This book started off great - really creepy and engaging- the end was not as good as the build up tho’ - great narration

The start of the book is slow, with a predictability of events and who is responsible for them. However half way through the book takes a more interesting turn and instead you are pulled into the plot more partly due to sympathy for Henry. The rest of the characters could have held more intrigue but the second half was far more engaging and worth reading.

a book of 2 halves. the first is all about some mysterious deaths and the quest to discover who or what was the cause.
about half way through the book we solve the mystery and the second part is about the ongoing consequences.
I found the first part of the book an intriguing mystery. a whodunit with magical mystical overtones. 4/5
the second part of the book, for me, was dull and drawn out. 2/5.
