Excellent
Really enjoyed Nickys full story. Book One was the first I encountered from this author and this universe that I encountered. I remember intially criticising the author and this story in particular. However coming back to the beginning I have a new found confidence in this author and his work. This universe is incredible and dealing with the trans world in this storyline was well done.
I did find that from book 3 the audio was weaker and there were repeated sentences and I felt the dual narration was distraction as I felt it wasnt consistent over point of view.

Great series!
Overall, this is a fascinating and engaging action and adventure story, with vampires, witches, werewolves, demons, and a new-to-me, unique form of creature, the Neck, a sort of siren/vampire/incubus hybrid creature that lures its victims by transforming into what they most desire and then eating them. Although I recommend the series, the individual audiobooks varied in quality IMO, so I am leaving individual reviews below.
Scared Shiftless – 5 stars
I really enjoyed this first book in the 'Legend of Nyx' series. I loved the heroine and her side-kick Brucee (spelling?). Her internal conflicts and self-reflection were truly eye-opening. The stories many twists and turns really kept me involved and trying to figure out what was happening in the story. So many crosses and double-crosses. I loved the aspects of found family with Nyx's friends, too. The narrator was great and did a good job with the accents and giving all the characters distinct and different voices.
Bat Shift Crazy – 3.5 stars
I had trouble relating to Nicky and I didn't feel the connection/love between her and Devin. In fact, Devin was out of the picture and seemed more like a side character for most of the book. There was no real heat/passion in their relationship to me. The part I found most enjoyable and entertaining were the stories of Cain, Melinda, and Holly. I found the history of Cain, and his current position as a werewolf and psychiatrist truly engaging. In fact, I have to say I enjoyed him as a character more than Nicky. So, a mixed bag for me. The narration was good and really gave the characters flavor.
No Shift, Sherlock – 4 stars
This story started a bit slow for me, but it picked up around chapter 7, and I was hooked after that. The mystery was engaging and a bit of a departure from the first two books and the struggle with the 'Morning Dawn'. I enjoyed the story overall, but the narration detracted from the story. I like the idea of a male narrator for male voices and a female narrator for female voices, but unfortunately, they didn't flow smoothly in this audio. It sounded like the parts were recorded separately and then spliced together. There were some unusual pauses. Additionally, there were several instances of repeated lines, sometimes with both narrators repeating the same line. Still a worthwhile listen, but be prepared for these weaknesses.
Shift for Brains – 4 stars
I enjoyed this story which seems to bring a conclusion to the story of the Morning Dawn; however it left some loose ends in Nikki/Nyx story. I felt the story ended on a bit of a sad note, kind of a HFN for the city. The conclusion seemed a bit pat/rushed as far as recovery. The world (or a city) doesn't go back to normal that fast after a tragedy/pandemic. Nikki's final thought soliloquy seems to be an attempt to end on a hopeful note (no pun intended), but it still left me feeling down. The dual narration worked much better and more smoothly than in the last audiobook (No Shift, Sherlock), but there were still instances of repeated lines and part of a chapter, which threw me out of the story. I liked seeing Alice and Mercy play bigger roles again, and I would be eager to see if the vampires as a whole can change in the future.
Shift Happens – 5 stars
This is a great continuation of the Legend of Nyx series, and picks up after Nikki/Nyx and her friends aborted the zombie apocalypse. The Neck Nikki drew out to help defeat the zombies are focused on her, now, and want her to return to her former self and return to the water. But, Nikki likes where she is. Will she be able to resist the call, and can she protect her friends? I love Nikki's devotion and loyalty to her friends and family, a circle that grows in this book. There is plenty of action and adventure, challenges and surprises, as the story progresses. I can't wait for the next book to see if Nikki finally defeats the Neck to live HEA with Devin and her family. Along with the seriousness, there is also plenty of humor and snark...and sprites (so many sprites)...it's more than just Brucee now. Hide the liquor!
Shift on a Shingle – 5 stars
This is a fantastic conclusion to the series. It brings all the loose ends and open plot-lines together in spectacular fashion. We see old friends and new, face increased dangers, hope, despair, and always with a fun dose of snark and humor, too. There are twists and turns aplenty as Nyx struggles to defeat the evil and protect her family and friends.
Overall, I truly recommend this series. It’s an engaging and engrossing adventure.
I received a free copy of the complete audiobook of the series and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
