A compelling thriller introducing a driven young detective trying to prove herself in the LAPD.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting.

Another excellent book from the incomparable Michael Connelly. Renee is an instantly likeable character that has you with her & hooked from the start. This is made all the more enjoyable by Katherine and her wonderful performance !!

A brilliant new character from Connelly, can't wait to hear more of Renee Ballard, or better yet see her meet up with Bosch and Haller. I was so enthralled I just sat and listened, instead of doing chores at the same time, so as not to miss a single precious word. Nice to see some familiar LAPD characters from earlier books, too. And the reader is perfect.

I do think that the narration of a book can make or break it, This narrator made me feel as if I was having a panic attack because she read at such a speed. The story was OK but it was whizzed through at pace and I felt that some of the tale was lost in the telling.
I will get the second book in the series as there is a different reader and the characters seem OK.

I have another gripe with the narrator who managed to mispronounce some words, and I am not talking about the American language, common words that either she emphasised wrongly or completely mispronounced.

I've always enjoyed Michael Connelly's character driven stories. Bosch is an absolute legend and now his new female detective is awesome. the story kept me hooked and will look forward to reading more of her battles.

As others have said, it took quite a while for the story to get going. I'm not sure of the research Connolly has done, but I never got the sense that he was comfortable with writing a woman as the lead.

All the pieces are there for a decent read, but none of the characters really made an impression on me.

I welcome the move away from Bosch, but the story here was a pretty mediocre effort to introduce a new character to focus on

I only gave three marks because any higher would be because I liked previous Connolly efforts.

I'll try one more of Ballard, in the hope the books develop into a more entertaining read.

I read the next in this new series first, loved it, but this is so very good!. there's no Bosch in it. the central Character called Rene Ballard gives a story with discrimination agains women in the police, she has all of the moral high ground of Bosch and more. highly recomended for twists and turns in a brilliantly crafted storyline.

If this was a paperback I would have said un-putdownable! I couldn’t stop listening. As usual Michael Connelly doesn’t disappoint.

I enjoyed the new character, Renee Ballard, and hope Michael Connelly will produce more books with this feisty heroine. Sadly I was distracted some/much of the book due to the monotonal voice of the narrator, Katherine Moennig. She didn’t differentiate between voices or narrative, her strategy for differences seeming to be speed of reading. Otherwise the story was really pacy and exciting. Next one, please, Mr Connelly, but with the one change!
