A great original story
This dystopian novel starts slowly but picks up pace as it progresses. A great central character and a good story. I found myself wanting more when I reached the end and would happily have bought the sequel. Gemma Whelan was a perfect choice to read it and her voice suited the central character extremely well

So much better than it has any right to be!
Like lots of people, I decided to get this based on knowing Andy from NSTAAF, so I was imagining it would be something fun and whimsical that I would come out of thinking it was a good try for a first novel. So I was as surprised as anyone to find myself unable to put it down! A genuinely gripping story, richly drawn, full of suspense and strikingly 3 dimensional characters. A world very different from our own but that feels terribly prophetic, dealing with themes of agricultural collapse and climate refugees! The narration is also excellent!
A shockingly good debut, can't wait for Andy's next one!

No surprises
This is a decent listen, a gradually unfolding plot, much more explanation than action, and not entirely successful in terms of world building, but it kept me involved and I got to the end, expecting a surprise but never really getting one. The twist if you can call it that may be a little predictable and not that big a deal. Perhaps listening to it since coronavirus arrived makes it far too similar a reality and not so stark as intended.
The narration is clear and listenable, if a tad monotone, but then again, some people prefer an unobtrusive reading so I’m sure it’s likely to appeal to many.

An enticing story of which I was excited to keep reading
I really enjoyed this story, the character development is good and I found myself really being able to picture the world in which this story is set. I enjoyed the continual references to the ‘before’ where we see the comparison of ‘pre-slow’ Britain to ‘post-slow’ Britain.
I was a little disappointed with the ending, it does feel rather abrupt, but I would recommend it to a friend nonetheless.

generally decent dystopia political thriller
good page turner, some nice allegory for our times. pretty good characters and well performed audiobook reading. while the premise of 'what if the earth stood still' is a bit of a trope, it's been well done here in terms of the Geo-political context. could be a good basis for other stories set in this world. some of the details bugged me (why talk about the 'night' in a land of perpetual light? where does the tobacco come from in a world of crop shortages?). racing also quite slow. other than that though, a good read.

Takes time to develop, left wanting more
I love AHM and was excited to listen to his first book. I found that the book took a while to develop, and I felt like the end was just the beginning. It didn't grip me until around three quarters in, and while I enjoyed the concept I felt like could have been better executed. It didn't feel like life had changed as much as you might expect if the earth stopped spinning. I think I was expecting a little more apocalypse. Definitely not a waste of time though, and I'd happily listen to a sequel 🙂 (hopefully it starts with and maintains the pace of this book's final chapters).

kept me listening without stopping
Love the unique twist to this story. don't usually like the doom world's, alternate realities all too often go over the top picturing doomy situations yet this story kept me listening multiple hours in one sitting. Pulling me in deeper and deeper.
