About this listen

There are many reasons why it might seem unwise to walk, mostly alone, through the Middle East. That, in part, is exactly why Leon McCarron did it.

From Jerusalem, McCarron followed a series of wild hiking trails that trace ancient trading and pilgrimage routes and traverse some of the most contested landscapes in the world. In the West Bank, he met families struggling to lead normal lives amidst political turmoil and had a surreal encounter with the world's oldest and smallest religious sect. In Jordan, he visited the ruins of Hellenic citadels and trekked through the legendary Wadi Rum. His journey culminated in the vast deserts of the Sinai, home to Bedouin tribes and haunted by the ghosts of Biblical history.

The Land Beyond is a journey through time, from the quagmire of current geopolitics to the original ideals of the faithful, through the layers of history, culture and religion that have shaped the Holy Land. But at its heart, it is the story of people, not politics and of the connections that can bridge seemingly insurmountable barriers.

Vivid account of the region

Great book that looks into the people not just the scenery. Wish it was a bit longer though.

A fascinating walk through the Middle East.

Leon’s story isn’t just about three different trails through countries that rub rough shoulders together, it’s a walk through history, through lands of conflict and the stories of the wide variety of people he met along the way. And for the most part, as he says, it’s more about the similarities of people rather than the difference despite borders, where they lived, what language they spoke or what God they believed in. It’s not just a book about hiking or the Middle East.,it’s one I found at least, to be about connection, simplicity and maybe hope.

In depth account of a walk through the holy land

A fascinating insight to the holy land from the ground up, a skilful story that covers the area in a good level of detail from the various peoples that call it home. The sections on the Bedouin are the most insightful. 100% worth a read if you wanted to know more about this section of the Middle East

Interesting book - loved it

Interesting and balanced interpretation of one mans journey through Palestine /Israel. For me the perfect balance of narrative on the trails of the journey, the story of the people Henry and the political undercurrents. Love this book definitely worth a read/listen

Fascinating story, walking in the Holy Land

I loved this book, the descriptions of the meetings with people along the route, the places, the atmosphere but also the hardships that do come with long distance walking. Leon's reading was great too, highly recommended!

Distracted.....

Really interesting subject....an astonishing journey...however,
narrator's delivery made it hard to
really 'hear' the content.
