Summary

When a wealthy benefactor is found dead in Michaelhouse, Brother Michael and Matthew Bartholomew must find the culprit before the college is accused of foul play. At the same time, Cambridge is plagued by a mystery thief who is targeting rich pilgrims. Moreover, pranksters are at large in the university, staging a series of practical jokes that are growing increasingly dangerous and that are dividing scholars into bitterly opposed factions.

Bartholomew and Michael soon learn that their various mysteries are connected, and it becomes a race against time to catch the killer-thief before the university explodes into a violent conflict that could destroy it forever.

Good read

Enjoyable as usual. Already put the next book on my wishlist. Thoroughly readable, good to take on holiday.

Love the series

Enjoyed this one a lot and naturally David Thorpe voicing this makes all the difference. Yes the plot is confusing but all part of the charm. If you got this far into the series you’ll be a fan regardless…

Women Beware...

I am addicted to this series; I enjoy the Cambridge setting and the core set of characters. The mystery in this novel has an interesting background in pilgrims and pilgrimages - set a variant of the rivalry between academic institutions and town and gown. The usual plot complexity challenges the listener/reader. For me there is something of ‘credibility stretch’ when this mystery finally plays-out. Sometimes these novels spring surprises that gives you a jolt as far as the main characters are concerned. There are none here. This is a mystery outing, totally unconcerned with character development. All this said, the novel holds the attention. I have been ‘religious’ in tackling these novels, avoiding looking for any summary or publisher blurb. The novel is performed with the usual clarity. Main characters are very well voiced. Matthew and Michael remain a focus of interest including humour.

Too convoluted

Maybe this book is better read than listened too? I've listened to it twice and I still don't really understand what was going on. Too many plot twists and turns. It's an enjoyable romp with Matthew and Michael doing what they always do but the ending left me scratching my head.
