About this listen

A dark family secret

When Alice’s father dies after a tragic hit-and-run, his death stirs up unanswered questions about her childhood. Who was her mother, why did her father never speak of the past, and why can’t she remember anything before the age of seven?

An island cut off

But when she receives an anonymous letter containing a photograph of a refurbished gothic guesthouse surrounded by water, and an invitation to stay, old memories fight to resurface.

Alice has visited before. She is certain of it.

Who will survive?

Convinced the clues to her past lie at the hotel, she checks in. But once on the island, a wild storm rages, waves crash violently into the rocks, and the house is cut off by the roaring sea.

Then two guests are found dead. And the hotel owner is missing. Will Alice ever uncover her secret past?

And will anyone leave the island alive?

An utterly gripping thriller that will leave you listening long into the night! Fans of The Guest List and The Sanatorium will love this nail-biting story.

It took a bit to get into it even with the story being quite thrilling from the onset. There have been other stories with such plots but still the way this was built was unique and the parallel development in past and present made it very intriguing. It seemed very obvious who might be the person behind and still easy to fall into each rabbit hole and eat each red herring, At the end I wasn’t even sure what I thought at the start anymore. I’m curious to see what the author comes up next I’m already hooked to it.

Not new and still unique

Everyone said it was good, and they weren't wrong. It kept me guessing till the end. Very well read but let down your some dodgy editing.
It had an Agatha Christie feel to it. Brilliant from start to finish.

What a gripping story

Loved this book. Bit slow initially (though needed) but once at the house it was gripping and twisty!

Creepy tale with twists

I am not a big fan of being spoonfed the likeability of the characters, I prefer to discover that myself, and I suspected the baddy fairly early on (no spoilers) - and I found the characters a bit lacking in nuance.

But that's personal taste, the plotline is cleverly convoluted and the timelines work well.

slightly longer gaps in the narration would have been helpful (when jumping between timelines and povs)

I really enjoyed this listen. it was macabre enough to be mysterious but not too violent or nasty.
I loved the atmosphere created on the island and the intrigue of the interwoven histories.
Perfectly narrated by Rose Robinson. I shall definitely be checking out other Amanda Brittany novels.

A modern day Agatha Christie

I liked the story and I kept me guessing but the narration was too quick in parts, jumping from one characters point of view to another without a breath or pause between.

good

This is a great story. Had me looking left and right for the answer to all my questions. Rose Robinson has to have a special mention. She is a fantastic narrator. She brought so many characters to life. I will look for her again. As my heading said. This is a gooood book. Well worth the listen.
