About this listen

July 8, 1921. Ireland. A British Officer is shot dead on a remote hillside south of Dublin.

November 22, 2015. United Kingdom. Former police detective Jayne Sinclair, now working as a genealogical investigator, receives a phone call from an adopted American billionaire asking her to discover the identity of his real father.

How are the two events linked? Jayne Sinclair has only three clues to help her: a photocopied birth certificate, a stolen book, and an old photograph. And it soon becomes apparent somebody else is on the trail of the mystery: a killer who will stop at nothing to prevent Jayne discovering the secret hidden in the past.

A real pleasure and delight to listen to, characters and story was detailed and moved swiftly along.can not recommend highly enough.

Excellent

Was a great story if you ignore the lazy stereotypes. The narration and bad accents however grated all the way through.

Great story, not a great narration unfortunately

I enjoyed the unique angle of a genealogical investigator... and the two time frames running alongside. I didn't enjoy the narrator at all... her voice was grating and the rise and fall of her voice annoying. It detracted a lot from the story. I also didn't enjoy the character, explosive specialist who f...d (swore) incessantly... was such a brief period in the book, but added no value at all, and was totally unnecessary.

A fascinating angle to detective fiction.

Enjoyed the story but it was spoilt by the narrator. Would buy more books by this authornbut not using this narrator

Good tale

I love anything to do with ancestry/genealogy so was delighted to find this book. The mystery bit of the book was good but other parts of the storyline were cringe worthy.
The narrator was something else, almost drove me insane, I would never listen to another book she has narrated.
This could have been a good book but for the narration and the un-necessary farcicle bits.

Could have been better

I would love to listen this book as like the storyline but I couldn’t even get through the first chapter listening to the ridiculous affected voice of the narrator, a couple of words in every sentence being raised a few octaves. Presumably she thought it gave an emphasis. It didn’t. It was incredibly irritating. Awful, painful. I went on a few chapters to see if it improved. It didn’t! I listen to audiobooks to relax, this did the opposite. Will see if it’s available to read on Kindle. I have to put stars. I haven’t listened to it beyond the first character. I do think I would enjoy reading it. Who picks these narrators?

Narrator

I really enjoyed the story, the twists and the turns. But, oh boy, this was very poorly narrated: almost like the narrator was smiling/laughing all the way through.
This ruined the pace and the drama of the tale.
It says a lot for the story that I persevered to the end, it was a close-run thing.
I would read/listen to more by this author but NOT if this narrator is involved.
Sorry, I don't like to be so negative about someone's work but this narrator is awful.

Good story, terrible narrator
