About this listen

The concept ticked a lot of boxes for me, and I eagerly dived into this book. The story did not disappoint, from early on I wanted to see how this ended. Sadly, the writing was workmanlike at best. The characterisations and dialogue were especially bad. The players in this story seem to have been written by someone who doesn't get out much and can only imagine how people interact. Some of the behaviour exhibited later just does not fit the characters developed earlier on. The career focussed astronomer becoming a damsel in distress just didn't ring true and neither did the overwhelming, reason affecting, romance that developed between the main character and her cartoon counterpart. Cixin Liu this is not.

I won't share the basic premise of the story, spoilers darling, but the maguffin is guff. The universe, well our universe, doesn't work the way the author thinks it does.

A four dimensional universe with two dimensional characters, hardly hard science fiction.

Slow start but persevere

It would be tempting to call this boring. It has emeritus events in the story to make it exciting but the characters and writing is child friendly. I feel it lacks real grit and emotion.

Not what you’re looking for if you like exhilaratingly dark sci-fi.

Overall educational and I learnt a lot but almost quit a few times through just from sheer boredom.

Yawn, plenty of detail and technical knowledge, lacking in excitement.

The narrator was excellent and brought the characters to life. The story took a while to get going but the climax was worth the wait. I enjoyed the physics explanations regarding the black hole, and although I have no idea if it is accurate it made sense as far as my understanding goes. Physics sand philosophy have always been intertwined and I would have enjoyed more that the few chapters which touch on this. Worth listening.
