About this listen

The radio dramatisation of The Hobbit became a classic when it was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1968 and it continues to delight today.

Tolkien's famous saga, the prelude to the Lord of the Rings, has all the ingredients of fantasy and adventure: dwarves, elves, goblins and trolls, a fearsome dragon, a great wizard, a perilous quest, and a dramatic climax. At the centre is the unsuspecting hero Bilbo Baggins, a home-loving unambitious Hobbit who is suddenly thrust into the biggest, indeed the only adventure of his life.

My father had this on cassette tape and growing up I would listen to this story as I went to sleep at night. Takes me back to sinpler times. Brilliant performance expertly delivered. Great way to get the kids into middle earth on long car journeys

Superb nostalgia

Love Tolkien and a BBC dramatisation however the quality of this one was bad. Could have been remastered for a digital age!

Good story but bad quality

I remember listening to this on a 4 cassette tape set when I was little and now my kids are listening to it albeit on their Kindles! Superbly adapted and engrossing.

A blast from the past

Excellent work here by the BBC. The voice acting and sound effects are spot on. I would listen to it at home, on the bus or at the gym, and it was easy to disconnect from the rest of the world and submerge into the story.

A real classic

A fine tale, and a good introduction to the world of Middle Earth. This BBC dramatisation suffers a bit from the somewhat old-school BBC Sound Workshop effects by comparison with more recent versions, but the coming of age and adventures of a simple hobbit are told well, and, although heavily abridged, the story is well told and is great company on a journey of one's own!

A bit dated, but still strong

I bought this on audio cassette many, many years ago. Some of the voices are a little, ahem, strange, Gandalf for instance. But it is a good story, well told. A must for any LOTR fan.

As I remembered it

Very fun and lively version of a well known classic, you're never bored listening to it. The sounds make it feel like you are in every scene of the book. Overall a great book, very well produced and has you at the edge of your seat in every chapter.
