Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Discover the charms and challenges of working at Scotland's most northerly mainland veterinary practice.

From conducting farm animal caesarean sections in the early hours to missing family plans in order to treat critically injured pet dogs, no two days in the work of vet Guy Gordon and his team are ever the same.

Based in Thurso, Northern Scotland, the small group of vets and their supporting staff cover a vast area of more than 1,000 square miles. The incredibly wild and rural landscape in which they operate brings a huge variety of work depending on the seasons, with the delivery of newborn lambs and calves in the spring, and the arrival of seal pups to the Northern Scottish coast starting in the autumn months.

The Highland Vet shows what working in one of Britain's most beautiful and remote locations really involves. Inside, Guy and his team share the high and lows, up and downs and ins and outs of their daily work throughout the course of a year, making this a truly magical celebration of Scotland's Northern Highlands, as well as the animals and people who call the region home.

Highland vet

All good.Guy isn't an actor or used to narration, but he does an effective job . Interesting to learn more about his background and family.
The stories are detailed, interesting and reflect the mixture of situations vets encounter.
I have been to Thurso a few times and love it .The book is excellent at describing the scenery, buildings, weather and sheer scope of the surrounding geography.
I would like a future edition which provides an update on the practice and what happened to the vets, nurses and reception staff featured.Or a final programme on TV that covers this. There are other real life vet shows on TV,but the Highland vet is my favourite as it is quite gritty, warm and seems less contrived.

Lovely to hear what a rural vets day can consist of

It was genuinely interesting to see what our vets do on a daily basis when not looking after our animals and hearing bits about their lives outside of the practice. Guy was very easy to listen to would be a great voice for audio books to let aid sleep to.

A really interesting listen.

Whether or not you have followed the television series ‘The Highland Vet’ this is a most enjoyable listen. It’s well written, with a great mix of anecdote, surgical nitty gritty, and general information about the day to day life in a year of a rural veterinary practice. There was laughter and tears - I was sorry when I came to the end.
I’m usually a bit wary about books read by their author but Guy Gordon has made an excellent job of both the writing and narration.
I highly recommend it.

A Joy

This is informative; where else do you learn the difficulty of turning a calf before birth; this is amusing; great stories too numerous to mention and it is a wonderful story of Love. For his family, both personal and professional and for his Caithness and all who reside in it.
