Typical urban fantasy premise done well

There are a number of common traits in many urban fantasy novels and this one checks off quite a few of them with the main character being a supernaturally-powered, financially hard-up, snarky detective with a tragic past, but the character comes across as far more than just that checklist of tropes and heads up an entertaining and varied cast of supernatural characters. I'm not fully convinced by her practically having a catchphrase to go with her powers though.

The setting for this book is something that could have set it more apart from others in the genre with it being set in Johannesburg rather than London or one of the major American cities, but I didn't find the difference to be that significant as it came across as the author telling us the setting more than showing us, although maybe those more familiar with the setting would appreciate the differences more.

The narration of this book was a definite strength, serving to help to further build the main character and also to enhance supernatural feel of the supporting cast too.

Overall, a fast-paced and enjoyable introduction to this series.

Fabulous start to the series

Wow! Loved it from start to finish.
This is a modern day fantasy novel with all the usual types of creatures and a mixture of magic and science. Jax is a great character and I can’t wait to see what happens next to her.
All the characters are well developed with not so much detail that you lose the plot of the story. There were several intermingling stories, but it was easy to follow and very enjoyable.

Jax is now a Wizard Detective and in her spare time a vampire killer .
She is asked by an Elf to find the Highfire Crown she doesn’t know that a vampire clan is also after the crown so things get quite heated for her.

A brilliant introduction to gripping series

To say my ears were transfixed would not be an exaggeration. As a female wizard Jax is a most unusual heroine, and with the pain from a tragic past which she builds on to create powerful magic, she's a compelling figure indeed. I particularly enjoyed the resident ghost in her flat. But there are many delicious details, and it seems there are no bounds to JT Lawrence's imagination. I love to listen to her stories while I do illustration, and the work simply flies out as the stories call me back to the computer after every break. Thank you JT, you certainly bring a lot of joy to my day.

The narrator is a delight, in spite of one or two mispronunciations - the delightful accents more than make up for that. One has the sense that Roshina Ratnam especially enjoys the orcs, gnomes and vampires she so effortlessly conjures up. A great performance.
