About this listen
A kingdom at war. A royal family at war with itself.
After the massacre of his people, Damien Dreadfire leads a patchwork army of unlikely allies against the Kingdom of Betanthia. The alliance teeters on the edge of a knife, as old rivalries between clans threaten to tear it apart.
With the help of his trusted friend, Einarr, and a strange mystic, Damien launches a bold offensive that will decide the future of the free lands. Short on time, and even shorter on men, the fate of a once vibrant culture and its people rests on the outcome of the next battle. Meanwhile, Betanthia's crown prince, Gareth Bethard, faces dangers of his own.
With his family coming apart at the seams and a growing conspiracy afoot, he tries desperately to hold everything together. Even as Gareth grapples with inner demons, he must learn to take up his father's mantle as the protector of civilization and defeat Damien’s invading horde. It's only the fate of a thousand-year dynasty resting on his shoulders, after all.

I don't think, since James Barclay's Raven series, have I read a book which had such a powerful opening.
Spoiler: Usually we meet characters early on who play major roles throughout the tale but here they are unceremoniously killed in battle. I admit to being very surprised by this fact but it set the stage for a deeply powerful, serious story of warring nations, powerful women and men of uncertainty.
Powerful women & men of uncertainty? I found many of the female characters far more empashioned and I fluebtial than the men here, not because men were to busy killing but the women regularly felt far more interested in the fate of their kingdoms than their men. Lucetta in particular was a fabulous character with a tremendously powerful arc.
Narration also was perfect, making it easy to identify the parties involved from a very large cast of characters and rarely was I confused or felt the delivery lacked passion.
I feel this book isn't for everyone. while there is a lot of action, it can be dry at times and I did feel the Game of Thrones lag at times but thankfully the interesting characters kept me going to see what date had in store for them.
Highly recommended to all fans of brutal but serious medieval tales of warrior states.
A slow burn full of tension & intrigue.
