About this listen

Suspicious deaths are not usually the concern of PC Peter Grant or the Folly, even when they happen at an exclusive party in one of the most expensive apartment blocks in London. But Lady Ty's daughter was there, and Peter owes Lady Ty a favour.

Plunged into the alien world of the super-rich, where the basements are bigger than the house and dangerous, arcane items are bought and sold on the open market, a sensible young copper would keep his head down and his nose clean. But this is Peter Grant we're talking about.

He's been given an unparalleled opportunity to alienate old friends and create new enemies at the point where the world of magic and that of privilege intersect. Assuming he survives the week....

I struggled to work out some of the acronyms that litter the story but perhaps there's a glossary in the actual book?

Also found it hard to recall what happened in the last book as it's quite a long time since I listened to it.

And what a sudden ending! I thought something had gone wrong when the voice of the woman interviewing the author and the reader piped up.

I really like KH-S reading these stories and generally enjoy them but this one seemed to finish shortly after it got going.

Acronyms ...

The story was excellent as expected and the delivery impeccable.
Research in to all aspects of police procedures, historical aspects of London , supernatural, music, science , technology pulling all in to the threads of the storyline making 'the weird bollocks' plausible and Peter Grant real!
The connections of the characters explained and linked back to prior books, reinforcing their 'types' and relationships to the current story and events amazingly seamless.
Problem is all 'read' and have no more- waiting for the next already!!

Author and Narrator combo superb as ever!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! I would and have, the story is rich and detailed, the narration is silken and the characters are full.

What did you like best about this story?

I just love the detail and rich character development and Kobna!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The scene in the barn is great for a number of reason none of which i'll spoil by letting on.

Any additional comments?

Waited a while for hanging tree and not disappointed until I reached the end, only realise there going to be a bit of a wait for the next one.

Peter, Ben, and Kobna Fantastic.

I've now listened to all six in this series, what can I say? I loved all six. Sometimes I've started with a promising series and as they go on they've lost what they had that attracted me in the first place, but not this series. I've thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of the books. Being a fan of the 'supernatural crime' genre, I like to have the 'supernatural' elements planted in good earthy soil, with a dash of flash but not overblown. Aaronovitch achieves this superbly. Throughout the series the characters have grown and bloomed. They are believable, rounded, down to earth (including the non human or not so human amongst them). Peter Grant, Thomas Nightingale, Molly, Toby (from The Folly) are characters we care about. Beverly and her family, along with the rest of the "others" are extremely well portrayed, without being "airy fairy" (sorry), which also makes them believable. Added to the mix is the mundane of police procedure, along with non-practitioner cops, all have whom have backgrounds, flaws, character traits etc. This gives one a sense of their being people you could be living next door to, have had a run in with, are married to, or know. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is an excellent reader, and to my mind, is the voice of Peter Grant.

Really enjoyable...like the rest in the series

The interview destroys the pleasure given by the book. Please remove it. It leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.

Scrap the useless interview

I was disappointed by foxglove summer and so, especially given all the delays, I was apprehensive about this one. Needn't have worried. The Hanging tree is as good as Moon over Soho and I feel that was the best book up to this point. There is little I can add without spoilers but I can say that we finally get some answers although not so much that the mystique suffers. There are a number of references to the graphic novel that I haven't read. Obviously that isn't available from audible so it would be a good idea to grab the paperback before starting this one.

Brilliant return to form

I love this series and the way Ben Aaronovitch writes. it makes me think of commander Vimes from the Disc World. These books say that being a Police is the a philosophy, a unique way of looking at the world. I think Terry Pratchet would have love them. Being a nurse, I appritiate this as I think we also see things and people a little differently from general populus. Anyway, whatever you do for a living you will love this witty, funny, warm and very London glipse into supernatural policing.

smart and funny

Fantastic narrator with equally fantastic source material. This series has become my favourite in a personal library of well over a hundred other fiction audio books.

Another exceptionally entertaining audiobook
