About this listen

The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss from the number one bestselling author of The Four Winds, The Nightingale and The Women.

‘A master storyteller’ - Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing

‘A rich, compelling novel of love, sacrifice and survival, as epic as the Alaskan landscape it so vividly describes’ - Kate Morton, author of Homecoming

‘A woman has to be tough as steel up here. You can’t count on anyone to save you and your children. You have to be willing to save yourselves’

Thirteen-year-old Leni is coming of age in a tumultuous time. Caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, she dares to hope that Alaska will lead to a better future for her family, and a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if it means following him into the unknown.

As Leni grows up in the shadow of her parents’ increasingly volatile marriage, she meets Matthew. And Matthew – thoughtful, kind, and brave – makes her believe in the possibility of a better life.

With her trademark combination of elegant prose and deeply drawn characters, Kristin Hannah celebrates the remarkable and enduring strength of women.

‘A masterclass’ - Karen Swan, author of The Stolen Hours

The Great Alone

I am always cautious after hearing so very many great reviews for a book that seems to be the latest fad. However, this deserves the praise as it’s a well written, engaging story.
It’s not ground breaking but holds the attention and paints a realistic picture of homesteading life in Alaska. (She says- never having been there!)
It wasn’t a challenging read, pretty straight forward, maybe a little predictable at times but I’ll try her other offerings.

Gripping

One of the best books I’ve read in years. Stayed up all night long listening to it.

Domestic abuse

This book was described as being about a struggle to live and survive in Alaska. Well, yes it was.
But, it was primarily a book about domestic abuse. The fall out for children involved, some reasons for it happening and the awfulness of it.
If you’ve been affected by abuse, you may not want to listen to this-it is relentless. I haven’t, but I nearly gave up listening as I just wanted the main character dead (sorry) and his wife to grow a spine.

Loved every minute of this book and I know I could read again, there's not many I could say that about. A total pageturner.

Beautiful book

What a beautiful book this is, so well written and narrated. Set in Alaska which I knew very little about, it transported me there and introduced some wonderful unique characters who survive in a tough environment but still support each other in their small community . I didn’t want this book to end.

compelling

I haven't written a review before but felt this book deserves it. I listen to books whilst driving and most times sat in the car at the end of the journey to listen more. It certainly isn't a fluffy romantic book but you get a real feel of what it would be like to live in Alaska. The narration is excellent although at the beginning I struggled as I has just finished another book with the same narrator and the characters voices were the same.

Thoroughly absorbing.

A book to lose yourself in. Complex characters with even more complex relationships battle to survive the reality of life in Alaska in the 70s. Highly recommended.
