About this listen
Have you ever wondered how one split-second decision could change your life for ever?
The Bonners are the most powerful couple in Texas. Bode Bonner is the Republican Governor and his wife, Lindsay, is always by his side. From the outside everything looks rosy. But the Bonners are not happy. Bode is bored - he longs for more excitement in his life. Lindsay is at the end of her tether. She's had enough of Bode's womanising and of playing the dutiful wife. She is desperate to break free of her bland, wealthy lifestyle. Then Lindsay makes an impulsive decision that helps save the life of a poor Hispanic boy. From that moment on, nothing will be the same for the Bonners. Everything is about to change....
From the author of the international best sellers The Colour of Law and Accused, this is an addictively listenable novel, filled with dramatic and ingenious twists and turns, that delves deep into the dark heart of Texas.
©2012 Mark Gimenez (P)2012 Isis Publishing Ltd.There is a subtle undercurrent of wry humour that gets even unpleasant characters to grow on you and provides some welcome laugh-out-loud moments. I was delighted to find a thriller with a sense of humour!
The narrator is excellent, particularly with the tricky accents, and adds to the enjoyment of this book.
Exciting and surprisingly funny

The story was very inciteful, re the American/Latino issues and made the whole issues of Political greed, dishonesty and craving for power at all cost very real. Yep I recommend it

The governor of Texas is a bit of a cad and his wife has had enough, she goes to the border on a goodwill trip and is heartbroken at the poverty and despair there. She decides to leave her husband and continue her nursing career there; but the governor is going for the White House and needs his wife by his side.
It was scary how third world the border seemed, I wasn't aware parts of America were still like that. This was a good thriller with a tense ending, you'll like it.

Is there anything you would change about this book?
I enjoyed the plot and characters. The novel was deeply placed geographically which gave a sense of authenticity. What could Mark Gimenez have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
He has a fast paced writing style and can use repetition and compare/contrast well (eg So and So character was here doing this whilst 250 miles away, So and So character 2 was here doing that). However, I began to feel there was too much of this by the end of the book. I guess the structure Gimenez chose for his novel wasn't for meWhat does Jeff Harding bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Harding is a great narrator. He is excellent at doing multiple voices in conversation so the listener always knows who is whoWas The Governor's Wife worth the listening time?

What did you like most about The Governor's Wife?
This is my first experience of Mark Gimenez and it was positive. I thought the book was well written, you were never quite certain how the plot would turn. It did get slightly long winded in the middle regarding the political differences betwen America and Mexico, this didn't last long however and overall, I really enjoyed the book. What was one of the most memorable moments of The Governor's Wife?
Not to give anything away - for me, towards the end of the book when Bodi and Lindsey are in El Diablo's office, it was slightly far fetched that they got out of there but hey, never let reality get in the way of a good storey eh!What about Jeff Harding’s performance did you like?
Now here is a man who has perfected his craft. I have bought a number of books Jeff Harding has narrated, his ability to use his voice to bring the characters to life is excellent. If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Even the devil can't take a Texan down!Any additional comments?
I look forward to reading more from Mr Gimenez!A Good Listen
