About this listen

Hell ride into the heart of shadow!

"Lilastien is missing." That's how Master Minalan the Spellmonger, the greatest wizard of the age, began the mission for his two former apprentices, Tyndal and Rondal. Both were men of means now, recently married and enjoying high positions as a reward for their past service in the war. But service does not end with an armistice; now that the war is over, the Spellmonger recruits them to track down the missing Alka Alon sorceress, Lilastien, whose knowledge of Callidore's ancient past has proven invaluable in recovering the crafts of the Ancients. She must be found and returned to safety. And they have to be quiet about it; this is a secret mission that could take them anywhere.

Thus begins an epic road trip with two brilliant young wizards who find themselves on a trail that leads through the Goblin Kingdom and into the cold, forbidding Minden mountain range, the very edge of humanity's settlement. Along the way, they see the horrors of the war's aftermath and hear tales of a legendary Golden Goblin—a unique golden-furred gurvani—which may well be a fulfillment of prophecy. They see the despair and destitution amongst the gurvani, the goblins who are attempting to settle formerly human lands they took in the war, and the humans who are exploiting them for their own profit. They discover the deep disquiet the goblins feel after the war is over, and the troubling murmurs of revolt and rebellion.

Dodging cults, goblin courtiers, bandits, and spies, the two follow the obscure trail of the Sorceress from the palace of the Goblin King into the bleakness of winter. To aid them, the Spellmonger has provided them with one of the remarkable vehicles of the Ancients, a wondrous carriage recovered from a ruin that serves as their transport, their security, and their temporary home.

But the news they learn along the way is troubling: rumors of a mysterious wizard who lives beyond the glacial wastes, the Adrian, a figure of legend amongst the goblins, who seems to be raising an army. Who is this shadowy figure? What has he to do with Lilastien? How are the enemies of humanity involved in her disappearance?

The road through the darkest mountains is troubling and leads to adventure and danger... and ultimately to the last place in the world they want to find themselves. For the forces of darkness are real, and their plots and schemes against humanity did not end when the war did. In the very heart of darkness, Tyndal and Rondal are challenged to face their worst nightmares... and discover the secrets of the Golden Goblin!

This series is my favourite and the side stories are always fun to listen to, add to the lore or world building or offer insight into the characters. This book had a bit of everything and seems like a big moment for the Goblins and the original war that started the series. I don't want to include spoilers but if you enjoy this series you should enjoy this book.

The pace is excellent I was never bored.

The narration was fantastic as usual from John Lee, he should do all the books out of habit, tradition and he is just that good. There are lots of characters for one narrator.

The author and narrator deserve thanks for all the hard work and I can't wait for the next audiobook.

An outstanding listen

The Golden Goblin, I really enjoyed all the left field bits, including a uniquely new bit and references to past stuff, as well as many hints for new stories, I want tge next book now....
Welll read as always with perfect character voices that John Lee has developed over the many Spellmonger stories he has performed in (not a narration, a real storytelller) in what appears to be a genuine partnership with the author. You have no trouble in identifying every main and a lot of secondary characters from the voice he employs.
Characters last discussed a while ago are advanced, other secondary characters are either expanded or introduced , other more recently introduced characters are grown & expanded.
This book has its focus on Rondell and Tindell along with some old favourites such as lilastian. (Only ever listened so apologies if spelling is out)
Off course The Spellmonger and Pendantra make an appearance.
Trying not to put any spoilers in but it was a figurative page turner. Binge listened to it from its release on Tuesday, it now Thursday evening. So many possible story lines are hinted at both alongside this adventure and for the future.
I want more now…..or at least some pre-orders please
I g

As always a wonderful story. No one tells a story like John, and no one can write a Story like Terry.

I really enjoyed The Golden Goblin! It was great to jump back in with the boys and see how their stories have developed. What I really appreciated is how you don’t need to have read the Spellmonger series to enjoy this one, it works well as a standalone but still has plenty for long time spellmongrels to enjoy. A fun, engaging read that’s well worth picking up.

A must for spellmongrels, but also a great standalone

The story was more focused than the recent books have been. Not so many characters and events happening, which makes it feel more polished and each scene more meaningful. It was fun and engaging.

Simpler

Another really good tale from Terry mancour. Leaves more than a few doors open for the continuation of all things kalimdore. During this tale, has surprising revelations, a new Gavani race, one independent of the alon. Nicely woven into the main story, with Min with his new persona, Striker and Haystack getting a dose of what it’s like behind gavani eyes. Plots plans and politics. I’m looking forward to the spectacular melt down of the alon council when they find out tindals, Randal’s and lilastins errantry.

I’m an addict for the SpellMonger books. Although this could be a stand alone book it fits in well with the rest of series. But reading the books in order avoids spoilers.

The Magic is Back

The first two thirds of this book are dull, just lots of talking and no action. The last third was back to the usual great standard, lots of action.

Took a long time to get going
