About this listen

Second novel in the chilling and epic new fantasy series from the bestselling and critically-acclaimed author of PRINCE OF THORNS and RED SISTER.

'If you like dark you will love Mark Lawrence. And when the light breaks through and it all makes sense, the contrast is gorgeous' ROBIN HOBB

On Abeth there is only the ice. And the Black Rock.

For generations the priests of the Black Rock have reached out from their mountain to steer the ice tribes’ fate. With their Hidden God, their magic and their iron, the priests’ rule has never been challenged.

But nobody has ever escaped the Pit of the Missing before.

Yaz has lost her friends and found her enemies. She has a mountain to climb and even if she can break the Hidden God’s power her dream of a green world lies impossibly far to the south across a vast emptiness of ice. Before the journey can even start she has to find out what happened to the ones she loves and save those that can be saved.

Abeth holds its secrets close, but the stars shine brighter for Yaz and she means to unlock the truth.

To touch the sky, be prepared to climb

This is a magnificent book well written and beautifully narrated and I can't wait for the next instalment The Girl and the Moon

Such an Adventure

A great sequel to the girl and the stars and just as good. Great that we didn’t have to wait years for the next episode, Hope the same is true for the next one!

Looking forward to the next one

Wow! I thought The Girl and the Stars was amazing but this book... I wasn’t able to turn it off. The audio narration provided by Helen Duff was as always very enjoyable. Amazing! I know I’ll listen to this a couple more times before the next one comes out.

Even better than the first book!

once again I am awed and entranced by Mark.
So many juicy twists and turns in an amazing story.
The narrator does a really good job and characters are easily distinguished.

Personally I loved this book, I'd split it into two sections. The first part is an continuation of the previous. But what I really loved was getting to see some old friends mentioned or in the time of Nona Grey in the second half.

Ooh connections

The story continues right where it left of from the previous instalment. This book is surprisingly very action packed with something going on in each part but with enough breaks in-between to not feel overbearing. I really like how the characters genuinely feel like results of their life experience and their past even to the smallest details.

Voice work was significantly improving during this book and towards the end, the voice jumping was completely gone and the narrator started being easily understandable.

Improved voice work made it easier to enjoy the story

An absolutely brilliant follow up from book one The Girl And The Stars, more fantastic storytelling in the sequence that is Book Of The Ice from Mark Lawrence. The worldbuilding is so well done and the setting and descriptions make everything pop to life from the pages and a story with enough pace, twists and surprises to keep you gripped from start to finish. I love the way Mark mixes fantasy and science fiction and he has done it wonderfully throughout all his series.
Love, loved The Girl And The Mountain. The character growth truly is brilliant, our main protagonist Yaz is amazing. She feels so real and her emotional connection to to her friends has grown rapidly, were being from the Ictha tribe would never had allowed her feel these emotions. I love all the other characters too Quell, Thurin, Erris, Maya, Zox. The crossover between the two series is excellent. In this book Yaz wants to head to green lands, thousands of miles away but first she must find her way out of the Black mountain and evade the priests who have finally got her in their grip. There's magic, excitement, it's action packed with adventure, danger, and everything a good fantasy has and fantasy lovers everywhere will absolutely love this world Mr Lawrence has created, but it's cold so ye better wrap up. I flew through this book and now The Girl And The Moon, I very highly recommend..⭐️😁💙❄️

Amazing Sequel.

I hate to say but this is fairly poor fare from the author, which is a shame. It, and the previous book, are written in some ways as if they are teen novels and come across as rather cliche and two dimensional in their themes and quite ham fisted in their execution. The story arc and the delivery of exposition are particularly poor and the latter seems to represent a vomiting forth of arcane lore. All in all, they are quite unconvincing and tedious even within the parameters of the world of Abeth. So my recommendation is don’t bother with this series and instead read Red Queen’s War, which is far superior and at least has humorous protagonists.

Not great sadly

I really tried with this audiobook, I love Mark Lawrence's work but I really struggled. the world is really interesting but the audiobook is making me feel like an observer of event from a safe distance rather than pulling me into the world.

I think I'll try reading the book instead, I've never had this happen before, but it all just feels passive even during the high tension moments.
